Because we didn't win a single test match outside sub-continent in 1990s.

That perception has partly been created by Tendulkar bhakts and it was partly true because of India's poor performance away from home - though it must be said, nothing came close to the 0-8 mauling. Even the series India lost away had some tightly contested matches.

Losing away to Aus 0-4 where we dominated the Sydney test and in one other test (Adelaide IIRC) we lost by 30 odd runs when it looked like Azhar & Prabhakar might win us the game chasing 330 odd in the 4th innings. 2. Losing to Aus 0-3 when Lele said that the team would lose 0-3 just after the team was picked :hysterical:

To turn great cricketers into demigods. India in 1990s was the strongest team at home. There is a reason why Steve Waugh called India the final frontier. We always had good batsmen, our bowling specially Kumble and Srinath ensured we rarely lost at home. Plus Azhar as batsman-skipper was second to none. His performance, statistically or otherwise, would beat every other batsman who has skippered India, at home for sure. The naara is given buland awaaz by fanboys to show we were one man band and that man has been doing it for 2 decades. Err no..Definitely not at home.

In the 80s we won only 3 matches during the entire decade - one in Australia and 2 in England. The last two abroad series have been quite poor for India but before that we held our own both at home and abroad

Surprising , was never aware of this stats, so this is during Tendulkar's best ODI batting days, we did pretty well in ODI'S for quite a long time now, We have improved in test's abroad maybe last 10 to 12 years..

Can see the 'neutral' fans taking this moment to take pot-shots at Sachin and his fans now. These really 'neutral' guys IMO are much, much worse than bhakts. At least bhakts are driven by their liking for a player, these guys are driven by hate. If they were really better than bhakts, they would have walked away from this, but no, they dont miss one opportunity to take cheap pot-shots and bring the general flavour of the forum down. Has been happening once too often nowadays. Though it was just before start 90's, but 89 tour to WI is something which also comes close to the humiliation that we faced recently in England and Australia. We lost 5 test match series by 4-0 after getting saved by rain in one of them. I don't know if we were able to offer resistance in any of these losses. Having said that those defeats had come against a WI team team which was close to worls's best ever. And if I remember my numbers correctly, we had three centurions on that tour - Shastri, Manjrekar and Sidhu, which is three times the number of centurions we had on australian tour. This 0-8 humiliation tops everything.

We were a good team in the 80s. We drew a series 1-1 in early 80s and would have won another 2-0 in 85-86 against Oz if not for rain. Also won 2-0 in England. Also Pakistan series were draws. Also in early 70s. won in England and WI.

Totally agree with this point. The claim that India was highest ranked test playing nation in 1995 shows why to fit methodolgy of one era to other era, is nothing but non-sensical. We didn't win a single away test from 1986 to 2002 (barring one in Lanka) and how we can talk about being number 1. In 90's we lost to Australia twice with margins of 3-0 and 4-0, we lost of SA twice, we lost to England twice, we lost even to NewZealand. We didn't play against Pakistan fortunately or unfortunately. So what is there to suggest that we were top playing test nation in 90's? It's funny to see how any un-related statement can be twisted in an argument against Sachin and Sachin-Bhakts.

We were almost the same if not worse today than we were back in the 90s. The only advantage we had in the 2000s was that we had started winning outside the subcontinent starting from the Ganguly era. But we are now back to basics and are starting to lose outside the sub-continent consistently yet again. So, we are back to square one. Perhaps our bowling were still better in the 90s compared to today. We had the Kumbles and the Srinaths who were at least consistent than the bowlers we have now. Even Prasad etc. were not that bad. And our spinners were quite good in those days whereas we hardly have any decent world class spinner left nowadays.
