Lurker Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 There needs to be a shift in the mind set and educational culture of kids from a young age. In the US, an overwhelming majority of the work force are only high school graduates. For the most part, they are able to maintain a decent standard of living, compared to developing countries. But I think this is going to change. The US economy in the future will come to a point where college level education will play a vital role, as it now does in India. Reliance on highly skilled foreign workers is okay for now, but the US needs to develop more home grown talent. Without doubting the need to grow the technical education in US, I think the bigger question is where does the technical talent go? It is a demand-and-supply. You can not simply create these talents without them ending up some place. The bigger, rather dark, issue is where are the next generation industries? The big one for the last 2 decades, or maybe 3, has been Information driven Technology. Prior to that you had mainstream industries, Automobile, Urban Development etc. We just do not have a lot of new areas coming up that will cause a boom.
punjabi_khota Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 There are a lot of people who come from not-so-good English background and they do very well in high level environments, thank you very much. And if anything it is folks like you who may have stacked odds against the hardworking people. You are right that an "English" toting 10 ranker will get a job, while a vernacular topper wont! And whose fault is that by the way? There is a difference between 'not-so-good' and zero. Jo log zero angrezi leke aatein, unhein courses milte hain IIT mein angrezi ke. Aapka bas chale to unke liye alag se hindi mein instruction honi chahiye ? I am not stacking odds against anyone, just telling how it is. Maine kai examples dekhe hai : those who improved in angrezi generally were more confident and able to do their work right, no matter what it is. Ever seen in US that a low ranker gets the job ahead of top ranker in the class? No. Why does it happen in India? McCalauy-bhakts like you maybe the reason :) Oh yeah, US doesn't place ANY significance on soft-skills :phehehe: Your are purposely going on tangent. I am not talking about 'english toting' crap, hell I hate it myself. But yeh hindi ke naam pe naare lagane se world scale pe kuch nahi hoga. Either you can re-invent whole of science and technology in hindi, or spend same time doing something more productive/original by learning a little english. You must be another of those colonial lovers I presume :winky: Chinese to kahin pahoonch gaye solely Chinese park kar, aur ab log wapis bhi jaa rahe hain. Tum lage raho angrezi ke pyaar mein. Chinkiyon se pooche kaunse bhasa ke journal mein chaapte hain vo research. Do kaudi ke chinese journal ya phir angrezi journal.

Aapka bas chale to unke liye alag se hindi mein instruction honi chahiye ? Vernacular ka meaning samajhte ho?? Ya like most IITians your grasp on "language" is also retarded? I was not even mentioning till you dragged Hindi into the mix. Read my post and show me who uttered the dreaded H word first. Go ahead punk! Your are purposely going on tangent. I am not talking about 'english toting' crap, hell I hate it myself. But yeh hindi ke naam pe naare lagane se world scale pe kuch nahi hoga. And maybe then you can realize what English has done to your comprehension skills Chinkiyon se pooche kaunse bhasa ke journal mein chaapte hain vo research. Do kaudi ke chinese journal ya phir angrezi journal. Yes, because that is exactly the topic here - journals and research and language. Lage raho barkhurdaar, humein khoton se yahi umeed thi :nice:
punjabi_khota Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 Replace hindi by vernacular. The point remains, I thought that was obvious. Baaki research topic OP mein likha hua hai, hiighly skilled immigrants ki baat ho rahi hai, PhDs ki baat ho rahi about moving back to China. :dontknow:
Crookbond Posted October 2, 2012 Posted October 2, 2012 My first hand experience with people with Chinese descent says that they struggle with English and it causes major impediment to their careers. As a PhD/Researcher a major part of your life is to convey your ideas to your community in written communication and by word-of-mouth. A lot of my Chinese speaking colleagues struggle with speaking - writing is even more difficult as they are unable to construct basic level sentences like the ones in my post. Subsequently, employers do not view them as potential recruits. Their in-breeding culture does not help as well.
