Aussies don't have a go-to man, says Lillee

EVEN an oblique compliment from Dennis Lillee is worth its weight in golden words, and Dale Steyn would no doubt claim the one paid him by the Australian great yesterday. "In great bowling attacks there's a go-to man - let's look at Steyn," Lillee said at the Waca as he watched South Africa's batsmen knock the spirit out of Australia's bowlers in the third Test. "The go-to man can break it open," he said. "When it gets tough, you go to that guy and he often comes through. In this [Australian] attack at the moment, you probably can't say there's a go-to man. "I'm not being unfair to them, but they're all around that 135km/h to 140km/h mark. There's not a guy there like a Steyn, who can go up a gear and down a gear." Lillee spoke a day after Steyn removed four of Australia's top six to help earn South Africa a first-innings lead of 62 runs despite their middling total of 225. The tide continued in the Proteas' favour yesterday when they set about building their lead to daunting proportions. "That nightmare out there" was how Lillee described Australia's position. Questions are being asked about the resting of the experienced Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus. Lillee's reputation as one of cricket's hard men is as significant as his taking 355 wickets in 70 Tests. Would he have taken a break with the series and the world No1 ranking on the line? "The only time I would have taken a rest is if I had a broken foot. "I had a big night out with Ian Chappell last night, and he said, 'Just imagine me trying to bloody say to you that you're not playing the next Test? I'd have to duck real quick, wouldn't I?' "My theory was never give a sucker an even break. Someone else gets a game and he gets five, and then you've got to get back in the side," he said. He talks about a seam bowler capable of going up and down gears. I think this is why we struggle. We have filth seamers and Zak is no more than a control option now. I think RP Singh when fit or Sreesanth is capable of this? Thoughts? We need a leader yet we happily play rubbish bowlers. Also autralian rotation policy sucks.
