Following recent discussions on rape and sexual assaults in media, there have been sudden increase in number of cases where consensual relationships are being declared as cases of rape or sexual assualt and innocent guys i are being arrested. There is urgent need for laws to give legal protection to both the parties involved in live-in relationships. Some of the news items came within last 3-4 days. HYDERABAD: A software engineer working with an IT company in Pune was today arrested by Mangalhat police here on the charge of cheating a 30-year-old woman artist, his live-in partner, by promising to marry her and breaking the promise. Cherukuri Sudhakar, a native of Khammam district, allegedly befriended the woman, a painter, seven years ago and the two had a physical relationship as he also promised to marry her. But after he shifted to Pune three months ago, he started avoiding her, said Mangalhat Inspector G Sridhar. "On the promise of marriage, Sudhakar had a physical relationship with the woman, however, he later refused to marry her and thereby cheated her," the inspector said. He was arrested from Pune last night and brought here.

ROURKELA: A girl has lodged a complaint at Lahunipara police station in Sundargarh district after being allegedly duped by her live-in partner. Reports said the youth abandoned her after four months of staying together and since then she has been running from pillar to post trying to locate him. The couple started living together in July, 2011, after the boy's parents objected to the match. Meanwhile, they coaxed him to leave the girl, a native of Dhamana Dhar village under Lahunipara police limits. All of a sudden, the youth, Madesh Tiru, left the house in December, the same year. He even switched off his cellphone. A couple of months later, parents of Madesh asked her to vacate the house she was living in. They also refused to divulge Madesh's whereabouts. "We have registered a case and investigating the matter," said IIC of Lahunipara police station R K Sahu. Though the youth had been missing since long, an FIR was lodged only on Wednesday, he added.

MUMBAI: A 26-year-old man, Amitkumar Singh, was arrested by the Goregaon police on January 24 after his cousin accused him of rape. The victim, around 25, is pregnant. She told the police that Singh had promised to tie the knot with her and got intimate, but failed to keep his promise. Singh is a resident of Nala Sopara. He worked in a private firm at Goregaon and had secured a rented accommodation for the girl in the neighbourhood. The victim is a native of Punjab and had moved to Mumbai a few years ago. Singh is her uncle's son. She was in a relationship with him for nearly two years. During this period, she also underwent abortions twice. "Singh took the girl to different places across the city, where he got intimate with her after making promises of marriage," said a police official. "The couple also lived together briefly and would keep shifting their location. When Singh refused to marry her, the victim lodged an FIR against him on Friday." Singh was booked under section 376 of Indian Penal Code. Singh was produced before a metropolitan court at Borivali and was remanded to police custody.
