Emergency Declared in Pak

This throws a lot of things into uncertainty - The Parliementary elections that are due very soon will be canceled for sure and that casts a huge shadow on the political future of Bhutto. God, what the hell are groups like Commonwealth, UN doing ? I suspect Pakistan maybe temporarily suspended from the common-wealth , not that they care too much about it.

Just another day in pathetic pak. Usual joke of a country going through their comedy routine which defines their whole history. The only danger for India is if the mullhas take control. If the islamic fundies take control one day then god knows what will happen . And one day they will take control as pak is day by day the islamic nutters are growing and gaining more and more power.

the whole shebang was 2 kick the Chief Justice out to re-instate himself (mushy i.e.) smoothly!!! And that (kicking) has already been done...AND replaced with clinical efficiency...!!!.. also Military hardware has been asked (demanded) frm USA...pretty convenient i say!!!

Musharraf addressing the nation... Says he took the decision with " Pakistan first" policy in the mind. Is listing the various terror attacks all over the nation that have taken place in the recent past to highlight the terror threat.

Emergency for sake of Pakistan - Does mushy think that Pakistanis are stupid? I am guessing he doesnt care what Pakistanis think (since he controls the millitary) he is throwing US a bone to make it more easy for them to support him - got to hand it to him, he is a smart guy.

After having a go at the judiciary, its now the turn of the media. Is accusing them of painting a negative picture of Pakistan and accuses them of letting him down after he made media free after he came to power in 1999. Is painting a very negative picture of pakistan, surprising. Blames the entire problems of Pakistan to the clash between the Legislative arm of the govt and an " over-active judiciary". Wow, this is the clearest sign yet that all wasnt well between him and the supreme court.

Is now referring to the Lal mosque as an "incident in which were embarassed worldwide because , right in the middle of the capital terrorists took control". Now , the focus is back on the extremists. Of how they kidnapped the Chinese , how they burnt down the environment ministry office , kidnapping police officers. The speech lacks focus and flow. He is oscillating between his two favorite topics - Extremists and the Judiciary. Says the courts let go free bonafide deadly terrorists for lack of evidence.

Now , to arguably the most interesting part.. The Presidential election and role of the Supreme court in it. Says the Supreme court dragged its feet on the issue of his candidacy for the post of President, appointing multiple commitees to probe the legality of the re-election. Says even though he was re-elected with a 57% majority , the Supreme court held back formal announcement of his re-election. To put it in his words, " Bhaiyon aur Behnon, yeh kya ho raha hain Pakistan mein ? Kya ho raha hain hamare mulk mein ?".

Ahaaa... Now, that he thinks he has outlined the reasons why he declared emergency, he has started to list what he intends to do from now on.. -- To re-invogorate the three arms of the govt -- To combat extremism. -- To appoint an intermediate constitutional authority -- The senate , national and provincial assemblies will continue to function. The govt ministers will remain.

Now , the focus shifts to the West... Speaking in english. Is requesting the West to understand the criticality of the situation, saying Pakistan is in the verge of destabilization. Says , after all that has been achieved in the last 7 years, Pakistan is taking a downturn for the worse. Inaction now amounts to Suicide. Therefore he had to take this action to "preserve the democratic transition he had initiated in 99". Essentially, he is trying to sell this move as a step as a boost to democracy. Dont know how many people will buy that. Again , the judiciary is in the line of fire. Accuses it of subverting his attempts to fully return Pak to democracy. Probably the line of the speech so far, " Please dont demand or expect the levels of Democracy, civil rights and freedom that you have been experiencing in your country in the last many centuries. Give us some time" Is drawing parallels with Abraham Lincoln taking drastic measures in 1864. Says the constitution is like a limb and the nation like life. A limb can be sacrificed to save a life.
