Pakistan cricketers administered polio drops

LAHORE: Calling all Pakistani cricketers national assets, who must be looked after, groomed and nurtured well, the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)- Najam Sethi, oversaw the administration of polio drops to the players attending a training camp in Lahore on Friday, 30 May. This was done to support UNICEF’s polio immunisation programme and create awareness about the devastating impact of the virus, Sethi said. The move comes amidst reports that many adults travelling abroad have been resisting taking polio drops under the misconception that they do not require to take it. It was also widely reported that polio immunisation certificates were being handed out across Pakistan to meet the WHO requirement without really ensuring that polio drops were given to all those certified as being vaccinated. Apart form the players, camp commandant Mohammad Akram, Zaheer Abbas, Moin Khan and Sarfraz Nawaz, were present. Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq speaking on behalf of the players said the ongoing training camp was the best one he had attended so far. He thanked the PCB chairman for his personal attention to players’ requirements and Mohammad Akram for running the camp in a manner which was most beneficial to each participant. Dawn reports that polio booths have been set up at three airports in Balochistan, including the Quetta International Airport, Zhob and Gwadar, to administer drops to passengers travelling abroad. Health Secretary Arshad Bugti inaugurated the polio booth at the Quetta airport during a ceremony held on Saturday, 31 May. He told reporters that, “For the past 22 months no polio case has been reported in any area of Balochistan and we are close to declaring Balochistan a polio-free province.†“In Balochistan, 47 permanent transit points have been established to ensure children entering or leaving the province get vaccinated,†he said.

Even if they were, they will have to show some proof which they might not have. The UN has enforced strict rules on travelers from Pakistan as today it is the country with the largest number of polio cases and many cases have spread from Pakistan to other countries. So all Pakistani citizens need proof of immunization before traveling.
