Must say I am a bit surprised. Gilchrist is worth his weight in gold but he is hardly the best batsman or anything. Of course him being the keeper allows Australia to play an extra bowler or batsman. The Aussie all time XI is very strong. Adam Gilchrist (wk), Mark Waugh, Ricky Ponting (vice-captain), Dean Jones, Steve Waugh (captain), Michael Bevan, Andrew Symonds, Shane Warne, Brett Lee, Dennis Lillee, Glenn McGrath, Greg Chappell (12th man). No loose ends as far as I can see.

He is their most valuable player ever in ODIs, not sure if he was their best ever ODI bat. I'd think Ponting is ahead of Gilly as a ODI batsman. However, Gilly's record in world cup finals (and finals in general) is second to none

Adam Gillchrist deserves it- one of the alltime greats of the game. There are only 4 names i consider to be a certainty in an alltime ODI XI - Tendulkar, Viv, Wasim and Gilly. A hypothetical opening partnership of Tendulkar-Gilly is truely mouthwatering.
