gator Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 Agarkar still remains an enigma.... and it doesnt change year after year, match after match..... yesterday, he was spraying all over the place in the first spell..... and then towards the end, it was really exciting to see, him fire yorkers at 142 kph which were reverse swinging like crazy... it is a different thing, chanders being a left hander, was not troubled much, cos the ball was leaving him.... but the righties clearly struggled against the inswinging yorker....
King Posted January 22, 2007 Posted January 22, 2007 Re: Agarkar I will give him a benefit of doubt considering it was a death bed for the bowlers. He came back in the end and bowled few good ones. I guess it is a matter of time he will come good again. He needs more match practice and unfortunately because he plays only ODIs it takes time for him to settle down. Agree he has been a bit enigmatic since he started his international career.

I'd always open the bowling with him... he bowls more WICKET TAKING deliveries per over than any Indian bowler... though he also bowls a lot of gimme balls... But if he opens the bowling the batsmen are not ready to put away the gimme balls unless they are total gimmes...and if he takes a wicket or two he really pushes the opposition on the back foot... And if the opposition is like Aussies who hate being pushed on the back foot and try to over attack him...he takes even MORE wickets...

Looking at his recent games in the last 8 or so months, you get... - Abu Dhabi cash adding ODI series - 2/33 and 1/30 (8), both very solid performances. - 2/38 (9), 2/25, 2/32, 1/24 (8), 2/44 in the Windies, where he was the STANDOUT paceman on either side. - 0/24 (5), 2/50 (8.2), 2/22, 2/44 (8) in Kuala Lumpur... given that the pitches didn't favour pacemen too much and the ground is fairly small, not all that bad - 0/34 (5) and 2/52 in the Champions Trophy - one poor display and one fairly average performance - and here he suffered an injury. After that he turned in three very mediocre performances in SAF... but keep in mind that he was flying in straight from an injury, no match practice WHATSOEVER and the issue of acclimatisation as well needing to be considered. The team management didn't take those into account and rushed him in, and at the end he also ended up leaving with an injury (so no idea how fit he was right through that series). And then the slogfest against WI, where those figures can be taken with a sea-full of salt, given the one-sidedness of the wicket. If you look at the big picture, he's not done too badly off late... just suffered from poor handling after injury, and then an atrocious pitch in the last game. Still one of our best ODI bowlers though with his ability to take wickets and threaten with the new ball... and should definitely be spearheading the attack instead of Sreesanth.

Aggy and Zak, the 2 most experienced in the team must open... only one of munaf or sree will play at any given time, unless the stupid team mgmt decide to drop Aggy for either, which will be a grave mistake....

dhruvdeepak Posted January 23, 2007 Posted January 23, 2007 Re: Agarkar Salil i respect your analysis of Agarkar's performance. yes his bowling has been on the up since the Abu Dhabi games (where he was the quickest bowlers on both sides, was getting prodigious swing and was stringing together tight overs regularly as a first change bowler), and i agree that the way the team management handled him of late has been poor (to be honest, team management has handled quite a few players poorly), BUT he has been off rhythm in the last few games, and that is the fact that matters. now he is definitely in the WC squad of 15(unless he strings together some pathetic performances in these ODIs and some other pacers do very well), but i would like to see him regain that rhythm which served him well in the Windies, or he wouldnt be in my playing XI. Furthermore, once he regains his rhythm, I would like to see him maintain it by playing Ranji ODIs. Despite his regular brain explosions, when he is on song like we saw in the Windies and Abu Dhabi, he is a great bowler to have coming in first change. He just needs to regain that consistency which he lost somewhere between Jamaica and Kuala Lumpur
