Lurker
Psyche of people showing their muscle power on hapless women has to be most intriguing one Why is it intriguing? You are somehow thinking that what happened is the first time something like this happens. Answer obviously is not. The incident has little to do with male psyche, media, oppression of woman etc etc. It can be explained simply in two words - mob mentality. When a mob turns violent it does two things: 1) Kill men if they can. 2) Rape/humiliate woman if they can. This is as true today as it was thousand of years ago. Look up most wars(or modern riots) and you shall see the same story. If in Gujrat 2000 people were killed do you suppose that meant 1100 men and 900 women(based on sex ratio)? No. Most likely the killed would include 1500 or so men, rest being women. You have to realize that in most customs/religions killing woman is considered shameful. At the same time it is considered even more shameful to be unable to defend your woman. How many riots happen in India because Muslim guy passed some comment on a Hindu woman or vice versa?? So quite possible that the mob after killing men turned their ire towards female in a manner to reflect maximum humiliation. The troubling thing, for me atleast, is how OUR psyche works, not the perpetrators(mob in this case). In the same state, against the same backdrop(Adivasi isues), about 9-12 people were killed the other day, did we give a eff? No. If the people killed included about 2-3 women would that have raised more eyebrows? Not much really. Now a helpless lady is paraded naked and not only does it become a media sensation it hits home with all of us! Funny how loss of life never bothered us really. xxxx
