King Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 Didn't watch him bowl but watched him bat. He didn't bat long enough to form an impression but was his bowling any good? Is he another Sanjay Bangar kind of bowler, bowling at 120s?

dhruvdeepak Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 Re: Was Joginder Sharma any good? to be fair to his bowling, the majority of his deliveries were offcutters deliberately bowled to take the pace off. he showed he has the ability to bowl 130+. i think we will be able to make a better judgment after he gets a few games. while batting he did not look to have any real technique, but again, we will see if he gets a few more chances.
gator Posted January 25, 2007 Posted January 25, 2007 Re: Was Joginder Sharma any good? 4 overs on a dustbowl while defending 180 is hardly a fair trial for the country;s most successful domestic cricket allrounder..... he is no JP... he cranked it up to 130+ and was cutting down on pace jus to keep things tight....he is definitely faster than PAthan and Bangar.... It is too late for him to join the WC party, but definitely a man worth giving few more chances.... He is anything but bits and pieces, I guarantee you..... C'mon, he is a strike bowler for Haryana who was taking 7fers and 8fers..... If getting wickets was so easy in Ranji, ask Ashish Nehra....

Although he doesn't have much competition for wickets; playing for Haryana and all. You don't ignore players with such records, but if he can't do anything noteworthy on the international stage he won't last long. Good, solid but unspectacular performances just aren't enough - otherwise JPY would still be in the side.

Achieved so much at this age... JP was 30+. 2. Averages 19 in 40 matches on indian pitches.... you dont get that with dibbly dobblies.... For comparison, here is Nehra.... 29 average in 70 matches and 27 yrs old..... 3. Gives the ball a mighty whack and has the reputation of taking a game away with the bat in acouple of sessions, as well as he has bailed out haryana on countless occasions coming down the lower middle order... 4. Can bowled at 130+, which he showed in the last game... 5. Bangar/Yadav have never run through sides... He has the best SR, this season in the entire country... our prodigy chawla, pathan, ishant, mahesh.... none could manage that.... 2 5 fers and 2 10fers...

An overall FC record of 253 wickets at 22.8. 7000 runs at an average of 39. Imran Khan-esque. The season before he was picked for IND, he took 54 wickets at a mind-boggling average of 16.25. 5 fivers and a tenner. Keep in mind that he has had to outperform two other FC stalwarts in Parida and ex Indian internationals Harvinder Singh and Bangar. My point is that the gulf between FC and Intl is absolutely immense. Any good L&L bowler can take wickets in India...but such solid performers often don't do enough to leave a lasting impression on the international scene. Bits and pieces cricketers are squad players at best, and India isn't really in need of one right now. That is why i can't see much hope for the likes of Joginder and JPY. Remember Vengy's interview with the Sportstar ? He said that he expects debutants to shine spectacularly in the few chances they get. If they do that, they get the longer rope. If not, it's bye-bye. Joginder will occasionally be good for two wickets a game, a few tight overs and a cameo with the bat - he will never be able to hold down a place on such performances.

JP has 253 wickets at 22 ave... but at 2 wickets per game.... thts not how u run through sides consistently.... at tht rate, imran will have 170 wickets, not 360 wickets... Joginder Sharma has 184 wickets at 19 ave... at more than 4.5 wickets per game, which is excellent and shows he can run through sides.... second lesson will be for u to watch closely, how they bowl... their intensity, runup and effort..... you will see one bowls lollipops and the other was restraining himself to bowl accurately because of the need of the situation and still showed he was capable of bowling at 130+ if he bowls normally....

I think he should have been given few chances in place of Dhoni to see if he is any good. Now with Karthik in the line up India can afford to rest Dhoni for a while. I don't want to see Dhoni burned even before the start of the WC campaign.
