The Kerala unit of Congress and its alliance partner in the state, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), said on Sunday that disallowing All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) examinees to take the test wearing hijab or veil was a violation of constitutional rights. The statement comes after a Catholic nun refused to take the test on Saturday when she was asked to remove her headscarf for mandatory checking before entering the exam hall. On Friday, while refusing the aspirants of the AIPMT to allow wear hijab/headscarf, the Supreme Court had stated that “your faith won’t disappear if you appear for the exam without a scarf.†The Kerala unit of Congress and its alliance partner in the state, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), said on Sunday that disallowing All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) examinees to take the test wearing hijab or veil was a violation of constitutional rights. Congress state president V M Sudheeran, in a statement, said denying permission to examinees to wear headscarf was unfortunate. “It infringes upon a citizen’s constitutional rights to protect his faith and religious practices. The Centre should take necessary steps not to repeat such incidents which hurt the religious sentiments of believers,’’ he said. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy chose to keep silent on the issue. MP and IUML national secretary E T Muhammed Basheer criticised the Supreme Court’s move to disallow a petition against new norms for AIPMT examinees introduced by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), which organises the exam across the country. On Friday, the Supreme Court had disallowed a petition by the Students’ Islamic Organisation against a dress code introduced by the CBSE for examinees and stated, “your faith won’t disappear if you appear for the exam without a scarf.†Reacting to the apex court decision, Basheer said, “The court has no right to interfere in matters of faith. The issue is not a simple one as the court had reckoned. Its verdict was against religious faith.†Speaking on the IUML statement, BJP’s state president V Muraleedharan said that the IUML is challenging the Supreme Court and the Indian Constitution. “If they are living in the country, they should follow the Supreme Court order. Otherwise, they should give away the citizenship,†he said. In the backdrop of large-scale irregularities in the AIPMT held in May this year, the Supreme Court had directed the CBSE to conduct a second test. Precambrian Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 The guys is a crack Kerala is seeing a definite rise in BJP votes. But the worst problem is that much of this is splitting the LDF -Left votes which thus splitting opposition votes and helping Cong's UDF.

Its the state where hindus used to be non religious - resulting in creation and maintenance of the Left Democratic Front. And resulted in BJP being a non entity. The opposite UDF (Cong-Muslim League - Christian congresses) are 100% on religious lines. Now hindus are starting to realize when LDF itself started to do 'sickularist' stuff like beef festivals, and conducting iftar parties. They are steadily moving away from the LDF, and adding to BJP. Resulting in a split. BJP's chance is to ally with the christian parties in the south. If that happens, its going to be helluva interesting.

Not sure how much influence this group has - you might know better as you seem very familiar with Kerala (I guess you hail from there). SNDP represents 'ezhava' caste in hindus... and is the biggest hindu caste there. There are two major hindu castes in Kerala - Nairs and Ezhavas. NSS represents Nairs and SNDP represents Ezhavas. The stance both factions have taken is equal distance from UDF and LDF. But anyone who has resided in Kerala knows that hindus don't vote like blind sheep - ie as per the whims of these organisations. Especially the NSS which is basically a joke these days. SNDP to some extent has influence over ezhavas but again it is highly debateable. Given that there is a consolidation in favor of BJP happening in hindu votes (breaking away from LDF primarily and a few from UDF as well), an open endorsement of BJP by SNDP is definitely not going to harm BJP's prospects. But ultimately it all would depend on the type of candidates they put up. Sadly Kerala BJP is like Delhi BJP which is suffering from crab mentality among its leaders. The most credible of them is the 80 yr old O Rajagopal (who also served under Vajpayee as a minister of state for Railways with distinction), but he is now too old to lead them. There is really no second in line. BJP really needs to find some leaders who have the charm and integrity and skills to lead them in the state. Once that happens, there is no stopping it.
