gilchrist (and mcgrath ) are masters at this. mcgrath never used to appeal stupidly (blatant edges, blatant pitched outside leg etc) - these are appeals that a lot of our bowlers make unnecessarily. they will also look at the umpire and appeal even for simple catches - like the icc rule book states; and not run and celebrate without waiting for a decision the umpires then assume that the likes of mcgrath and gilchrist are reasonable folks. and then, when the going is tight, they will let out a loud appeal and celebrate for a dodgy appeal and the umpire will invariably support them.

exactly and Gilly is even more shrewd .... he has built up this reputation of being a walker .... clever guy knows that such a thing is going to happen only once in a bluemoon and the percentages work in his favour.
THere was a New Zealander about two years ago - must have been Craig McMillan - who pointed this out. He was completely annoyed at Gilly's strategic appealing and mentioned it in a public interview

yes, Gilchrist jumps like a kid when appealing. That's really not on. I mean on one hand, this guy tries to show that he is playing in the right spirit by walking but on the other hand he is blatantly doing this.
