Ranji Trophy 2012-13

Recommended Posts

Batting at 4, opening the bowling and Vice Captain! :hail: What a team though Yuvi, Bhaji, Kaul, Mandy, Rahul, Sandeep. Shame most of these will play tests for India. Should still cruise to Ranji title though.
For doing that they need to get into the knock out stages. Think they have not made it to the QFs of Ranji for the last 6-7 years!

BCCI should ask all the players to mandatorily play round 1 of Ranji Trophy from Nov 2-5 Every fit player should be forced to play the Ranji round 1 from 2nd Nov. No excuses for anyone, especially for those who played the CLT20.

The schedule is very tight and hectic. They have just come back from CLT20 and there is also a tight schedule ahead with England and Aus visiting so the cricketers need rest. The out of form players can be asked to play in Ranji though.
The players playing CLT20 were playing a hit and giggle league. Likes of Dhoni, Raina , Sachin have played 4 matches in a span of nearly 4 weeks (make it 9 matches in nearly 7 weeks including World T20 for Dhoni, Raina etc). They came back from SA 2 days ago. 1st test vs Eng starts on 15th Nov. Wonder why they need 3 weeks of rest especially when they haven't played a FC match after NZ tests. Its ridiculous that Dhoni hasn't played a match for Jharkhand since 2005. Yes, the schedule for him has been crazy but this time there should be no excuses. Play the match from Nov 2-5 and you will still have a week off before the team gets together for the 1st test.

I endorse your opinion. However, players like Pujara have been playing domestic cricket and will continue to do so. Good for them.

Virender Sehwag would lead a star-studded Delhi line-up comprising the likes of Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Ishant Sharma when they take on Uttar Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy opening round away game at Ghaziabad from November 2-5. The likes of Sehwag and Gambhir would get some much needed practise in the longer version before the four-Test series against England starts off

Tendulkar, Zaheer to play Mumbai's first Ranji game

Ranji Trophy has received a big boost with the selection of Sachin Tendulkar and Zaheer Khan for Mumbai's first match, against Railways at Wankhede Stadium. The season kicks off on November 2, and it is understood that both Tendulkar and Zaheer wanted to get some first-class match time before the Test series against England, which begins on November 15. Ajit Agarkar had already been named captain for the first four Mumbai games. Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane are the other attractions in the strong 13-member Mumbai squad, to go with domestic warhorses Ramesh Powar and Abhishek Nayar. Tendulkar's last Ranji Trophy appearance was Mumbai's final win in 2008-09. Apart from being Mumbai's 38th Ranji title, the match is also remembered for Tendulkar's first first-class duck in Indian domestic cricket. Tendulkar has been going through a lean patch in Test cricket. His last century came in January 2011, and despite looking in good touch in Australia, he didn't score more than 80 in an innings. When he was bowled three times in three innings against New Zealand, former cricketers and commentators, including Sunil Gavaskar, showed concern over his form. Having played in the Champions League T20 after the New Zealand series, Tendulkar showed eagerness to play some first-class cricket before the big Test season ahead. India play four Tests each against England and Australia. Zaheer last played for Mumbai just before leaving for Australia last year. He, too, hasn't been in great form since India's World Cup win in 2011. He last took a Test five-for in October 2010. His fitness and endurance have been a concern too. He has played only seven Tests since the World Cup, breaking down in England. Wasim Jaffer, Suryakumar Yadav and Harmeet Singh were the two big exclusions in the Mumbai squad. Jaffer, the all-time leading run-getter in Ranji Trophy, has asked for leave for Haj pilgrimage. Harmeet is out with a finger injury. Yadav will lead the MCA XI against England A in a tour game that will clash with the Ranji season opener. Consider all these uncertainties, the Mumbai selectors have named the squad only for the first match. Mumbai squad Ajit Agarkar (capt.), Sachin Tendulkar, Zaheer Khan, Ramesh Poawr, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Abhishek Nayar, Dhawal Kulkarni, Ankeet Chavan, Kaustubh Pawar, Iqbal Abdulla, Aditya Tare (wk), Akhil Herwadkar (wk)

Most people here obviously have no clue about domestic cricket. They only jump up when they find some news about a familiar name. Vinay Kumar captained South Zone in the Duleep Trophy and people are surprised to see that he is leading Karnataka. :giggle:

Ganguly opts out of Bengal Ranji squad http://www.espncricinfo.com/india/content/current/story/588575.html

Sourav Ganguly has opted out of the Bengal Ranji Trophy squad for the upcoming season. Despite retiring from international cricket in 2008, Ganguly, 40, had continued to play the Ranji Trophy, captaining Bengal in most of their first-class matches last season. In Ganguly's absence, Manoj Tiwary has been named Bengal captain. One of the Bengal board's joint secretaries, though, said that Ganguly could return later in the season. "He would not play the first two matches, but depending on our team's position we may get his services later on," Sujan Mukherjee said. "It's a youthful side but we have players with international experience, looking forward to a positive season." Squad: Manoj Tiwary (capt), Parthasarathi Bhattacharjee, Rohan Banerjee, Jayojit Basu, Writam Porel, Anustup Majumdar, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Laxmi Ratan Shukla, Iresh Saxena, Ashok Dinda, Sourav Sarkar, Arnab Nandy, Veer Pratap Singh, Subhomoy Das and Aritra Chatterjee

"He would not play the first two matches, but depending on our team's position we may get his services later on," Sujan Mukherjee said. "It's a youthful side but we have players with international experience, looking forward to a positive season." Ganguly has played domestic cricket in recent years with the aim of staying fit for the IPL, a tournament which he hinted he might not play next year. "I have spoken to Pune [Warriors] officials. Maybe I will not play IPL anymore," he told the Bengali daily Ananda Bazar Patrika. "I had told the Pune management last year that I may not play in the IPL anymore." Ganguly captained Pune in the IPL this season, but had a difficult time as they finished bottom of the table with just four wins in 16 matches. Ganguly 's personal form was similarly poor, as he managed only 268 runs in 15 innings at less than a run-a-ball and also looked slow in the field. Subroto Roy, the owner of the Pune franchise, had said during the IPL that Ganguly would not play next season, and be a team mentor instead, but no decision was taken then. Bengal squad: Manoj Tiwary (capt), Parthasarathi Bhattacharjee, Rohan Banerjee, Jayojit Basu, Writam Porel, Anustup Majumdar, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Laxmi Ratan Shukla, Iresh Saxena, Ashok Dinda, Sourav Sarkar, Arnab Nandy, Veer Pratap Singh, Subhomoy Das and Aritra Chatterjee
http://www.espncricinfo.com/india/content/story/588575.html?CMP=outlook_news Is it the end of Sourav Ganguly in IPL?
New Delhi: With the Indian Premier League team's given the deadline of October 31 for declaring the names players they want to retain or put up for auction, it's an interesting few days on the cards ahead. And the biggest speculation that's making round is whether Sourav Ganguly is finally going to call it day as player from the league? Talking to Bengali daily, Ganguly has reportedly expressed his desire to be off the action. He has even conveyed his wish to the Pune Warriors officials, who reportedly, have agreed to part with him. In their first year, Yuvraj Singh was the captain for Pune. Due to his illness, he couldn;t be a part of the team this year as Sourav Ganguly took over the mantle. It is being speculated that with Yuvi back in the fold, he will return to the position. Or else, Michale Clarke's one-year contract will re-done and the Aussie captain may take over the Pune captaincy as well. Though it is not sure whether Ganguly would like to take up the role of mentor, or whether he has been approached for it too, the former India captain himself isn't willing to become a full-time coach just yet

Bengal team announced and now Shami' date=' is he inkured as all I knew after NZ tour was , it was a minor side strain, also very dissapointed with Mumbai selections, all trundlers.[/quote'] Shami has a side strain and will take some time to recover. Maybe he'll be back after a couple of matches. Still Dinda, VP Singh and Sourav Sarkar are a potent pace attack.

Time for Ranji Trophy to regain primacy http://www.wisdenindia.com/cricket-blog/time-ranji-trophy-regain-primacy/32472

Now, with new rules, a new format and presumably a new attitude, there is hope for the Ranji. Already the big names are back. Tendulkar, who hasn’t played in four years, is keen, as his 40th birthday approaches, to get in some first class cricket ahead of the England tour. Ditto Zaheer Khan, although his 40th is some years away. One of the positive fallouts of the much-criticised Champions League Twenty20 2012 is this keenness by players to get in some first-class match practice.

Maybe people wanted Uthappa or Pandey or Appanna or Mithun to captain. :winky:
And he wasnt captaining Karnataka in Ranji trophy last year for the whole season?:cantstop:
I have found the Vinay Kumar ridiculing quite ridiculous actually. In general, bowling captains are not preferred but this is really on a different level.

He has not played a FC game as yet. He does not average quite great in List A as well.
That's what I was pointing out as well (regarding his not playing an FC game as yet). It's high time they draft him into the Ranji team. Das has always had issues in terms of building an innings, but he can do a few things better than the other batsmen in the squad. Looks to be in good form right now. Should have been picked on the basis of potential and recent form.

I still think he's suited for shorter formats than the longer ones - probably can be picked once though. But, the lack of transparency on the selections means that we can just speculate on the reason.
