CC1981
I was reading the early part of this thread where people were in q/a mode and i just noticed the question about who was Bheem's son and who killed him and how. First part is easy- it was Ghatothkach. Who killed him is easy too- it was Karna. But how was wrong- people said Karna used Brahmastra against Ghatothkach. That is false, since Karna did not have access to brahmastra. According to the story, Krishna knew that Karna was a superior archer than Arjun if all astras and kavaj/kundalams were negated ( and even if Arjun still had his magical gandiva while Karna had an ordinary bow). Thus he asked Arjun to pre-empt Karna by meditating for penance and getting access to Devastras (Godly weapons) as boons. Karna only had one Devastra- Indra's shakti ( the weapon which never fails to kill its target). He earnt it as a boon from Indra when Indra came in the guise of a brahmin to ask away Karna's kavaj/kundala so that Karna is no longer indestructable. However, Indra granted Karna the power to use shakti only once. This is the reason Karna allowed Ghatothkach to wreck havoc with the Kuru army. He did not want to lose his only sure-fire way of killing Arjuna, since he knew he couldn't counter the combined archery skills of arjuna and the wits of Sri Krishna when in combat. Only when Duryodhan, desperate at seeing his army annihilated at the hands of Ghatothkach, implored Karna to choose between his obsession of killing Arjun or his loyalty for his friend (Duryodhan), then Karna was forced to use Shakti on Ghatothkach to live up to his vow to Duryodhan. It is said that Sri Krishna smiled at the death of Ghatothkach since now he considered the war to be won, as Karna had used up his only sure-fire way of killing Arjun. CC1981
The oldest warrior was a brother of Shantanu. He was older than Bheeshma. He fought for the Kauravas. I know this to be true but what is his story ? How is he alive so long ? Bheesma is bound by his oath to not die till Hastinapur is secure and he's got icchya-mrityu to keep him going. What did this bro of Shantanu(who'd be Bheesma's uncle by relation) do/have to keep him going ??
Rahul
oldest character: baahleek, grandfather of both kauravas and pandavas. baahleek was eventually slain by gadadhari bheem.
CC1981
There must be some explanation for any warrior in the Kurukshetra that's older than Bheesma. Bheesma is only alive because he's promised to take care of the kingdom to his dad and has icchya-mrityu boon to keep him going. Somone's gotto have a special story to've lived longer than Bheesma in mahabharata.

CC1981
another question i have is how the hell did MadraNaresh become the commander-in-chief of the kaurava army when Ashwatthama was still alive ? At the point of Karna's death, Ashwatthama is the only maharathi left in the Kaurava clan and he too has a boon of immortality. Plus being Dron-putra meant Ashwatthama had knowledge of all the weapons in the universe- this much is evident from him invoking the Brahmastra when the war is already lost. King of Madra was nowhere as good a warrior as Ashwatthama, plus he being the maternal uncle of Nakula and Sahadev (he was tricked to fight for Duryodhan) meant his heart wasn't in it completely. While Ashwatthama was burning up to avenge the deceitful death of his father. WTF was Duryodhan thinking, picking Madra King over Ashwatthama ? CC1981
:whatchutalkingabout:hahaha::hahaha: Seriously- Duryodhan was impetuous, temperamental, insecure and haughty- but he wasnt stupid. He very astutely made Bhisma the commander-in-chief of his army first and when Bhisma was neutralized, he picked the next best candidate in Drona. After Drona, it was the next best candidate in Karna..but after Karna, he had a brain-fart or something to look over Ashwatthama for some old geriatric king of Madra who got his ass kicked by Yudhisthir ?!?! ( Yudhisthir ! not even Arjun or Bheem or Satyaki..yudhishtir!!) WTF ! Ashwatthama would've swatted Yudhisthir like a fly (only one who could beat him from the Pandavas were Arjun,Bheem,Ghatothkach and Abhimanyu).
