Kolkata, January 17 At a time when Bengal cricket is down in the dumps following the senior team’s disastrous Ranji Trophy campaign that saw them get relegated, little-known Masrum Sarkar sent shockwaves across the domestic circuit community with an unbelievable 301. The young gun from faraway Bongaon scored a sensational triple-century for Kanchrapara Cricket Coaching Centre (CCC) in the otherwise little-followed Cricket Association of Bengal’s (CAB) 110-point junior tournament match at Kanchrapara. Masrum’s marathon effort came on the opening day of the two-day league match, as his knock guided the home team to an equally mind-numbing 634 all out in under 80 overs against the hapless Shilpashree Dum Dum Cricket Coaching Centre (CCC). Even as many in the cricketing community will be sceptical about the standard of the game run by the CAB at this level, Masrum’s outstanding innings does deserve special attention. The young bat, a regular at No 5, carted the Shipashree Dum Dum bowling around, and achieved the record triple-century in no time, getting there in just 126 balls. Masrum churned out a jaw-dropping 32 sixes, along with 19 hits to the fence, and struck up a number of key partnerships en route to the knock to eventually help his side pile the 600-plus score. And as usual, one could get no confirmation from the CAB of whether the day’s proceedings at Kanchrapara saw any records being broken in the CAB 110-point tournament. The 110-point circuit is the parallel of the traditional Under-15 category, and has been in place in Bengal’s cricket circuit for close to a decade now. Unlike the conventional age-group system, the 110-point method is a calculation based on the players’ physique, with their height and weight being taken into account with the age. There is also the CAB’s 95-point circuit, which is the parallel of the Under-13 level. Even as statisticians will marvel at the day’s unusual events — a team racheting up 634 runs and its top-scorer piling 301 — these scores will make pundits raise more questions on the quality of the game at the junior level in Bengal. Of course, the cricket officials present at the venue during the course of the match reckon that the ground isn’t too small either and that it’s a standard venue for many CAB 110-point tournament matches. The feat comes at a time when the mood in the Maidan’s cricketing community is down following the senior state team’s dismal performance in the Ranji Trophy. Summarised scores: Day I, CAB 110-point league: Kachrapara CCC 634 in 75.5 overs (Masrum 301, Krishna Mohanty 115) v Shilpashree Dum Dum CCC. Match to continue. Sub-Junior 110-point Ambar Roy Tournament: Kolkata School of Cricket 398/6 in 80 overs (Tanmay Yadav 106, Kundan Sharma 104) won by 264 runs against Putu Choudhury Memorial CCC 134 in 45 overs (Tanmay Yadav 2/22).
