Visibility was poor, but more worryingly, the air was poisonous and its effects were tangible. There were complaints across the venue, and the players, who started the day with a few drills and knockabouts, quickly abandoned the attempts and rushed to the safety of their dressing rooms.

At one point, Manoj Tiwary and Parthiv Patel, the captains of Bengal and Gujarat respectively, walked out for the toss, their white kits contrasting against the dirty air. However, after a short debate in the middle of the ground, they quickly walked back in. It was later learnt that toss hadn’t taken place – the air was too harsh on their eyes, which was also the general consensus among players.
