Like in this case, there was an appeal (but without so much melodrama), and thankfully Richie Benaud - who handled the appeal - saw to it that Gibbs was only slapped for verbal abuse, and not left with a racist tag. That's been forgotten by most, and I doubt anything ever happened to the match referee who gave the original ruling.
