Mr. Wicket
Just pulled a copy of Keith Miller/RS Whitington's "Bumper" off a shelf here. Long time since I've read any of Miller's books, and I've only skimmed through sections of this one. The acknowledgements/intro is hilarious, typical Miller - this leads into a foreword written by then-Australian PM Robert Menzies. We wish to acknowledge our delighted indebtedness for the graceful foreword which our great and lovable Prime Minister so graciously consented to contribute at a time when his despairing doctors were trying to hang a "Do Not Disturb" sign outside his office door. Really great men, of course, always find time, even when they have pneumonia and an urgent date with Mr. Churchill. We wish to apologise for the slump in the standard of cricket writing that follows immediately after the foreword, but trust that readers will console themselves with the knowledge that the foreword alone is worth double the money they paid for our fourth book. Rajan
not surprising to read from Miller, who once famously told-" one of you guys , go back to the hut", after finding that he had lead a team of 12 in to the ground", as captain. another interesting quote was, " ok, guys, scatter around", when he was 'setting' the field! probably the most naturally gifted cricketer ever played for australia and a great alrounder, in the true sense of the word. observer1
i love this comment, perhaps apocryphal, attributed to him... When asked about pressures of batting in a tense situation, he said ' Pressure? This aint pressure. Pressure is having a Messerschmidt up your arse at 10000ft' Link to comment
