Ranji Trophy ODI tournament, 1st day Chopra clatters ton in Delhi's big win Cricinfo staff February 27, 2008 The following are the summary of results on the first day of the Ranji one-day tournament 323567.jpg Aakash Chopra: 101 off just 89 balls © Getty Images North Zone Aakash Chopra's 89-ball 101 propelled Delhi to an emphatic nine-wicket win over Jammu & Kashmir at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi. Ian Dev Singh's gritty 90 lent some respectability to the J&K total, once they chose to bat, but a total of 168 was never going to be too challenging for a strong batting line-up and Delhi cruised to victory with 22.1 overs to spare, gaining the bonus point in the process. Karan Goel's century set up Punjab's win over Haryana at the Harbax Singh Stadium in Delhi. Punjab made the most of a flat batting pitch, rattling up 297 in their 50 overs, before new-ball bowler Gagandeep Singh triggered a collapse with three wickets. Sumit Sharma's 54 allowed Haryana to limp to 174 but it couldn't prevent them from conceding the bonus point. Half-centuries from Manvinder Bisla and Paras Dogra steered Himachal Pradesh to a five-wicket win over Services at the Palam A Stadium in Delhi. Services had been propped up by fifties from Yashpal Singh and P Rao, the debutant, but 243 proved inadequate in the final analysis. East Zone In just his second one-day game, Sajan Mohanty grabbed four important wickets to lead Orissa to a thrilling four-run win over Assam at the Nehru Stadium in Guwahati. Debutant Payas Ranjan Sinha had propped up Orissa with a patient fifty and their bowlers did a fine job to defend 243. Half-centuries from S Suresh and Sarupam Purkayastha, a debutant, went in vain as Orissa held their nerve in the climactic stages. Sharing six wickets between them, Vineet Jain and Jayanta Debnath bowled out Jharkhand for 179 before the Tripura batsmen knocked off the target with 3.3 overs to spare at the Railway Stadium in Guwahati. Jharkhand's decision to bat backfired, with Tripura's bowlers not allowing partnerships to flourish. A target of 180 was always going to be a tricky one and it required good allround contributions from all batsmen to seal the victory. South Zone S Vidyut's cracking 120 set up Tamil Nadu's convincing five-wicket win over Goa at the Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. C Ganapathy, the new-ball bowler, nabbed three wickets to restrict Goa to 198 before Vidyut outshone the rest during the run-chase, allowing Tamil Nadu to collect a bonus point as well.

This is not to take anything away from Aakash Chopra nor his new swashbuckling approach to batting, but I believe that weaker states like J & K who have barely any chance of one victory really drag down the level of competition in such Indian tournaments and make statistics too unreliable to make any sort of judgement of a player on.

Agree, msb. I'd like to see the Ranji ODs take a similar approach to the f/c, with the leagues being based on the team qualities (Elite/Plate), rather than zones. West Zone's the one to look at now with very strong Bombay and Baroda teams and solid lineups from Maharashtra, Saurashtra and Gujarat - shame only a couple of that group will advance.

Jaffer slams 178 in sensational Mumbai win The results from the second day of the Ranji one-day tournament. More... Ranji Trophy ODI tournament, 2nd day Jaffer slams 178 in sensational Mumbai win Cricinfo staff February 27, 2008 The following are the summary of results from the second day of the Ranji Trophy one-day tournament 323001.jpg Wasim Jaffer's knock helped Mumbai chase down 358 against Baroda © AFP West Zone Wasim Jaffer clobbered an unbeaten 132-ball 178 as Mumbai chased down 358 to post a sensational win over Baroda at the Deccan Gymkhana Ground in Pune. Jaffer carted 19 fours and four sixes and put on an opening stand of 159 with the in-form Ajinkya Rahane in just 21.3 overs. Mumbai looked to be in trouble at 299 for 7, but debutant Ankit Chavan, coming in at No. 9, scored a brisk 24 to help Jaffer guide Mumbai to victory. Baroda reached their total on the back of a ferocious assault from Pinal Shah, who made an unbeaten 157 from 101 balls. In another batsmen-dominated thriller in Pune, Gujarat fell an agonising five runs short of Maharashtra's 326 at the PYC Gymkhana Ground. Each of Maharashtra's top three batsmen scored more than 50, with captain Venugopal Rao going on to make a 79-ball 104. Gujarat were well on track for victory after Priyank Panchal (123) and Parthiv Patel (66) took them to 183 for 1 in 30 overs. However, with none of their other batsmen making more than 30, Gujarat ended up short of their target. South Zone Tamil Nadu and Karnataka remain the only undefeated teams in South Zone after two rounds of the Ranji one-dayers while Andhra and Hyderabad have lost both their encounters. Palani Amranath and R Ashwin shared seven wickets between them as Tamil Nadu shot out Kerala for 91at the Central Polytechnic India Pistons Ground. Only three batsmen reached double figures for Kerala with debutant Krishna Chandran making 35.The modest target was chased down with seven wickets and more than 26 overs to spare. M Vijay led the chase with an unbeaten 41. Offspinner Karimuttathu Rakesh's tidy bowling of 9.4-3-18-2 was the lone bright spot for Kerala. A dominant batting performance from Karnataka saw them cruise to a 111-run win over Hyderabad at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Powered by Bharat Chipli's 100 and Vinay Kumar's 75, who shared a 143-run stand for the third wicket, Karnataka piled up a massive 312. Ravi Teja was the only Hyderabad bowler to escape punishment, finishing with tidy figures of 1 for 34 in his 10 overs. Vinay then tore through the Hyderabad top-order to leave them struggling at 66 for 4, a position from which they could not mount a serious attempt at the Karnataka total. At the Guru Nanak College Ground in Chennai, Goa clinched a high-scoring thriller by two wickets. After opting to bat, Andhra posted a challenging 291, thanks to opener Manoj Sai's 88 and captain Gnaneswara Rao's 59. Goa made a spirited reply with their openers setting the platform with a 100-run stand. They appeared to be coasting to victory with former international Ajay Ratra (63) and Shadab Jakati (74) taking them to 269 for 4, but Goa lost four wickets for seven runs to be in a spot of bother before securing the win with four balls to spare.

Has the report of day 3 come? It seems the one day wickets are absolutely patta wickets and we all know about the domestic bowlers available. I'm waiting for this tournament which is between teams at one zone only, to get over and Deodhar trophy to start to get a better assessment of players.

the ranji odis should also be played in a elite-plate format just like the ranji trophy so that the teams play other teams of a similar level and it puts an end to these crazy scores we r seeing. also with 2 teams of different zones playing, we might get to c different scorecards

Delhi whip Punjab by 10 wickets New Delhi, February 28 A marathon 277-run stand between openers Akash Chopra and Shikhar Dhawan led Delhi to a comprehensive 10-wicket win over Punjab in their Ranji Trophy one day (North Zone) match played at the Feroz Shah Kotla here today. Punjab had scored 274 for 8 in 50 overs. Akash Chopra, who scored an unbeaten century in the last match against Jammu and Kashmir, started from where he left on Tuesday and crafted a 140-ball 130 runs which contained 18 hits to the fence. Dhawan too looked to be in full flow as he slammed 139 runs off just 121 balls. Earlier in the morning, Delhi captain Mithun Manhas won the toss and asked Punjab to bat first. Manhas's decision to field first yielded immediate results as Punjab were reduced 16 for two in the fourth over. But then, Ravinder Singh(64) and captain Pankaj Dharmani (33) started the repair work with an 80-run stand between them. Later, Uday Kaul scored a patient 64 off 81 balls and posted a 104-run stand with Ankur Kakkar (59 off 56 balls) to set a competitive target for the hosts. For Delhi, Amit Bhandari was the pick of the bowlers claiming two wickets in 10 overs. HP crush Haryana Vishal Bhatia grabbed four wickets for 32 runs as Himachal Pradesh thrashed Haryana by eight wickets in their one-day match here today. Batting first, Haryana were all out for 193 in 49.5 overs, with Sachin Rana (73) being the top scorer. Himachal replied with 197 for 2 in 44 overs, with Hemant Dogra (74) and Sandeep Sharma (59) putting on 144 for the opening wicket. — UNI ------------------------------ --------------------------------- Punjab had got the better of Delhi in the past few years but Delhi seems to be churning out good young batting and bowling talent in the recent past. But Punjab seem to be in the rebuilding phase with lots of new faces
