What would have been different if Rohit was given the captaincy over Kohli in ODIs?

In January 2017, Dhoni stepped down as ODI captain and Virat Kohli was given the authority. Since then, we have been excellent in bilaterals and have won ODI series in SA, Aus & NZ. From January 2017 to Present, we have lost only 2 ODI series. 2-1 to England in England in 2018 & 3-2 to Australia in India at home last year in 2019. So overall, we have been very good.

However, we have won 0 ICC trophies under Kohli even though he had 2 chances. CT 2017 & WC 2019. I know that we can’t blame the captain alone in those 2 losses but he does deserve a fair share of the blame. We played Asia Cup 2018 without his presence and brought the trophy back home under Rohit’s captaincy. I highly doubt we would have won it had Kohli been our captain in that tournament.

Another issue is that Kohli is not allowing youngsters to settle into the team. After 3-4 bad games, youngsters get dropped and never heard of ever again. We see these shenanigans in RCB as well, which is why they have never won the trophy under Kohli whereas MI has already won 4 under Rohit.

One big difference that I believe Rohit would have made is that he would have supported youngsters big time as compared to Virat. I believe that Rahul/Iyer would have settled in at #4 long ago and would have been given tremendous support instead of bringing back Rayudu out of nowhere and dumping him 6 months later. I also think that Rohit would have dumped Dhoni before the World Cup since he doesn’t rely on him like Kohli did. Maybe even Rishabh Pant would have been settled at #5 by now.

Another difference that I think would have happened is that we would have won the Champions Trophy 2017. No way was Captain Rohit going to lose to both Bangladesh & Pakistan in knockout matches. We defeated those 2 teams rather easily a year later in the Asia Cup in more familiar conditions to them. Kohli choked in the final and that’s a fact!

We may or may not have won the World Cup 2019 but we definitely would have given a much better fight. As said before, the likes of Rahul & Pant would have been settled by now at #4 & #5, this would have led to them performing much better at the grand stage and maybe even winning the trophy! But instead, we had a unsettled middle order thanks to Kohli.

So to conclude, I believe that Team India would have been Much Much better off had Rohit been given the ODI captaincy 3 years ago instead of Virat Kohli. We would have had a much stronger and settled batting line up today and most likely a trophy or 2 in our cabinet.
