Phew!...when I read it on the Chit Chat forum headline...it was truncated to..."Tata buys Jaguar for $2"...I nearly died of shock...

In the last two years, the net foreign acquisitions in India has been higher than the foreign acquisitions made by indian firms (this probably includes the acquisition of arceleron by mittal steel too). Hence, the whole bit about india capturing the world is mute. jaguar has been in steady decline and sales have not quite seen the profit other luxury brands have noticed. for instance, aston martin, inspite of all that it is, is languishing when it was aquired by ford. maybe a better aquisition, if managable at all, would have been porsche (which owns VW, yes you heard me right, porsche owns VW).

Jaguar is worth just $2 billion ? I thought it would be worth more. Seems like its part of an overall strategy by Tata to widen their portfolios and broaden the scope of their brand abroad. But beyond all, it will give Tata access to invaluable technical know-how that Jaguar has developed over the years. Tata has essentially been making commercial vehicles ( trucks, lorries) and passenger cars and vans. For them to move on the luxury car segment, it requires a quantum leap in technology, which would have taken atleast a decade had they started from scratch. Now, they can leapfrog that gap since the tons and tons of technology blue-prints, wind-tunnels, crash-testing facilities and all the the state-of-the art composite materials developed by Jaguar for their luxury cars, is now officially Tatas'. I think its a nice symbiotic relationship. Tata can profit immensely from Jaguar's brand and technology and Jaguar badly needs lot of cash which Tata can readily provide. The only problem I detect is the totally opposing natures of brands of Tata and Jaguar. While Jaguar is renowned for its luxury sedans and saloons, Tata recently launched a car at a factory price of 1250 pounds. Jaguar's brand could take a hit, because of this. Besides, Tata already had an unpleasant experience in the UK, shipping the Tata Indica as the City Rover, as part of their tie-up with Rover. That car got VERY bad reviews.

actually the deal is for a purpoted 2.63 billion but experts say that is a very very bloated bid. jaguar is worth crap at the moment. ford has recorded record loss upon record loss. we are however, also aquiring land rover simultaneously, and LR has been doing well lately. the end impact of this deal remains to be seen, i am not very optimisitic though.
