Desi Cartman Posted April 10, 2008 Posted April 10, 2008 I have always wondered if it will be a good thing or not if they were to legalize betting in India Mohali: India should take a cue from England and Australia and l e g a l i s e b e t t i n g , wh i ch will not only eliminate the menace of matchfixing but also fill government coffers, feels ICC’s principal advisor-designate IS Bindra. “If betting is legalised, it will be in the interest of the government as not only will it eliminate match-fixing but also earn states revenue in crores. The Board, too, will stand to benefit,†Bindra, who also heads the Punjab Cricket Association, told reporters here this evening. “My personal view is that if you want anything to be regulated, it has to be legalised,†he said. “Media estimates suggest that bets ranging anywhere between Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000 crore are placed on a ODI match. By that magnitude, one can imagine that government can easily earn Rs 5,000-7,000 crore as entertainment duty and other things,†Bindra added. “In England and Australia, betting already enjoys legal status. Now, it is for the governments in the sub-continent to consider it,†he said. The former BCCI president said he had once mooted this idea to start betting in PCA stadium here but did not find favour with the then government. Bindra suggested that the media should “build up a climate†in favour of legalised betting so that government is forced to think over it in the future.

Desi Cartman Posted April 10, 2008 Author Posted April 10, 2008 I voted yes but Im not entirely convinced as it will get ordinary people involved into it .. where as right now most of the people who are betting a rich businessmen ... But I guess if I can bet online then why not in India ...
Tapioca Posted April 11, 2008 Posted April 11, 2008 BCCI - so it must have something do with making $$$s for themselves. Perhaps, BCCI will "approve" certain betting organizations for cricket matches, and get a percentage. Like the media restrictions for IPL, unauthorized organizations could be banned from betting on BCCI events. Or even better, BCCI can do it themselves. There can be scenarios like this - a very green wicket is prepared for an India-Australia Test match, and almost all the bets were on the match having a result. Then suddenly, on the night before the match, all the grass disappears and the Test ends in a dull draw. BCCI could make a killing by manipulating the results like this.
