veer Posted April 15, 2008 Posted April 15, 2008 Several television stations in Afghanistan have ignored a government ban on the broadcasting of Indian soap operas. The authorities have said the broadcasts are in conflict with the country's Islamic values. The ban came into force on Monday night, but some private television stations have continued to show the popular programmes. The government says that infringements of the ban will result in punishment. Conservative Muslim clerics in the country argue that the serials, which show dramatic and passionate love stories featuring the elite of Bombay, are immoral. They often show men and women together, and what some consider to be "immodestly" dressed women. Principles of Islam President Hamid Karzai said: "These television programmes, which contradict the daily life of Afghans and which our people do not accept, must be stopped." Afghan law forbids publishing material "contrary to the principles of Islam", and clerics argue that the soap operas fall into that category. Afghanistan's most popular TV channel is defying the ban But the most watched station in Afghanistan, Tolo TV, said the ban was illegal. "It is an unlawful declaration, we broadcast our programmes based on media law, and we will never stop the airing of these Indian serials," said presenter Masood Qiam. Tolo TV first showed the soap operas in 2005, and continues to broadcast two of the five programmes mentioned in the parliamentary declaration, which is supported by the Ministry of Information and Culture. ----- what century they are living in?
Lurker Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 Actually these serials should be banned in India as well. I have never understood who watches these stupid melodrama serials really. On the Afgan topic, it is always heartening to see Indian Entertainment media getting affection abroad. Afganistanis typically always have a soft corner for Indian media and India should use it for strategic purpose. If USA can spread its lifestyle thru Hollywood why not us?

I have never understood who watches these stupid melodrama serials really. we keep on harping abt our padosis living in a backward era the kind of serials being dished out on television today and the fact that it is readily accepted gives an idea how indian public is not willing to move on and how ths mediocre **** is being represented as indian culture and tradition:((Take for (eg) if there is reincarnation angle or the family in a serial are in deep crisis the god/supernatural is played or overplayed to the hilt .Serials are portrayed to be successful not because it has good script but the number of 'k's and 'z' s it has in its title Indian serials are a big pile of **** .And the directors of these are serial are treated as some creative genius :hysterical: Even some news channel keep on propogating superstitions mostly hindi news channels aajtak,starnews and indiatv,zee news these news channels have half hr slot for astrological and tarot card predictions .I mean what the **** .You are supposed to be a news channel .Thank god for ndtv and ibn news channel atleast they have some worthwhile debates and shows. In this mediocre piece of indian media **** only the advertising guys/indian advertisements are the only thing that stand out.

Lets not forget that live any other commercial industry, the television industry also is driven by demand and supply.They make what people love to watch. Yes, the news channels show ****....but the number of such news channels are increasing because people are watching that ****.
THX_1138 Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 so i cant get playboy tv, or cinemax, or even showtime in kabul? **** life sucks. but come to think of it, if these poor afghan lads ever got a glimpse of genuine pornography, they would be confined to the recesses of their caves designated as toilets and the per capita consumption of tissue paper would skyrocket... maybe to flush out the al queda, instead of smart bombs the united states ought to have dropped "sorority sluts 9" and other rich cultural material like "naughty nurses", "big jugs extreme" etc etc... maybe its the solution to all of the middle east... just air drop masses upon masses of porn... its difficult blowing yourself up when you are imaginging being blown... on a serious note... get over it Karzai, these television shows are downright pathetic, but for the backward vestige of the cold war that your country is, they provide a much needed escape from your the dreary existance currently suffered by your masses. f.b.m 1
