Can India really afford to face another attack like Sar 2 Covid 19? As a country that hosts 1.4b people, we have responsibility towards our population. Should we officially start research on viruses and other chemical / biological dangers out there.

Why cant we have our own "secured zone" type of secluded zone where there is a continuous research carried out for the betterment of our country and humanity in general.?

Please keep religion, politics out. If you can think as an Indian, come up with Ideas and thoughts on the topic. Lets make it a worthy discussions for people (non-members) to refer to as a source of information on this topic. Post any details related to this topic that is already in place as our initiative undertaken by Indian Government  or private enterprises.

India has a top-notch virology lab - NIV, Pune.  But, I don't know how much they are involved in strategic partnerships with govt to specifically foster national interests.  Regardless, the time is ripe for India to invest heavily in all facets of modern life-science R&D and technologies - for the betterment of food production and health.  Being a manufacturing hub for pharma is just the beginning - India needs to embrace grassroots R&D, complete with rigorous apolitical scientific foundations and uncompromising quality of work.

What I am worried about is, often things are ignored for economical reasons. Either some research is way too expensive or has no direct returns. In such cases, we should spend enough to complete research and document it for any future use of that research. We dont need to productionize everything but having adequate preparation ready will go long way.

Basic research funding, including pandemic preparation work, is tough to justify to politicians who are looking for something that will help them brag and win the next election.  That's why we (the world) is always in sleep mode or panic mode when it comes to pandemics.

Yup stupid politicians need to stop taking credit for such work. PERIOD. problem solved. Us getting to 5-7T economy, there is always a scope for couple of $B for an on-going research with very targeted goals. Without indulging any more than needed to get maximum value in this investment.

In next 10-20 years spend few $B per year. With such pandemic, it saves us over $T in economical losses.

Also, I dont trust our neighbor at all. To counter that, we need to prepare better. There are significant economical benefits out of such research, every now and then but most of it will be just a preparation.
