Mr. Wicket
main challenge is to convert from circus cricket to odis. Tests - unlikely. Why? Have you ever seen him in first class cricket? Link to comment
THX_1138
could someone here post a video of his batting, and maybe shed some light on his bowling exploits? his profile suggests he bowls off spin; but is he a genuine spinner or maybe a mark waughesque part timers? and even if he is indeed a part time bowler, does he possess sehwag's guile? i was quite impressed with his performance in the T20 World cup final where save for the one shot that cost his wicket, he seemed all set for a serious rooting of the pakistani bowlers! amits
yusuf pathan is a genuine off-spinner. took 27 wickets in 7 matches in the ranji-trophy & is a type of a bowler who likes to plan dismissals. yusuf pathan, also spun west zone to a win over eng a in the duleep trophy and yusuf pathan should replace harbhajan singh as the off-spinner in tests Link to comment
Mr. Wicket
Not a part time offspinner, he originally got a place for Baroda on the merit of his spin. Fairly tight, consistent and accurate rather than really incisive on flat pitches, but on turners he can be a major wicket taker in the f/c format - outbowled Chawla and Rajesh Pawar in one notable game on a turner this season. As a batsman, he's produced some very fine innings down the order and a few really explosive hundreds. He belted one vs. Delhi in the Ranji semi - by which point the game was gone, but it was a superb piece of hitting with controlled, intelligent aggression, smart strokeplay and the sort of batting that could in another match scenario turn a session or game. Don't think he's ready yet for a permanent test spot, but I can see him doing very well as a horses for courses pick - e.g. if we're playing 5 bowlers in a test (particularly at home w/ 2-3 spinners) and need someone to beef up the batting as well. He's young, maybe with time his batting and/or bowling might improve to the point that he could be a regular in the test side. But LOADED with potential. Link to comment
amits
i agree with salil. yusuf pathan will be useful in tests on indian pitches if we decide to play with 5 bowlers or if the other spinners r injured Link to comment
fineleg
Why? Have you ever seen him in first class cricket? Just watching him, his technique seemed to be more of a hitter, than of someone who can compose his innings and build it against quality bowling in demanding Test cricket. Lets see. The jury is out, and I'll keep an eye on how he develops his skills. Link to comment

amits
yusuf pathans selection in test cricket(if it happens) will be based on his off-spin bowling & not his batting. yusuf pathan took 27 wickets in 7 matches in ranji-trophy & even spun west zone to a win over eng a in the duleep trophy and yet some blind ppl out here r conveniently forgetting that fact. yusuf pathan, even made 3 fc 100s this season and all 3 of them came off <90 balls. yusuf pathan should replace harbhajan singh in test matches as the off-spinner. he is better than the harbhajan singhs & ramesh powars in off-spin bowling. incase u guys dont know, during the team selection for sa tests, even yusuf pathans name was discussed, but eventually ramesh powar got it(due to mumbai-quota) Link to comment

If selections are done based on regional quota then nothing is more pathetic than this...its ridiculous! Link to comment

amits
u r saying yusuf pathan is not a test material based only on his batting. look at yusuf pathans bowling before making a comment. yusuf pathan should replace harbhajan singh in tests as the off-spinner. yusuf pathan is a type of bowler who likes to plan dismissals and took 27 wickets in 7 matches in the ranji-trophy becoming the 2nd highest wicket-taker among spinners, next only to piyush chawla. also, yusuf pathan spun west zone to a win over eng a in the duleep trophy Link to comment
SachDan
Its too early to say he's not a test material.Whats the difference in the batting techniques of YP and Sehwag ? Viru is one of India's most successful batsman of the last 5 years where as the much perfect technical batsmen like Chopra,SS Das and Jaffer came a cropper against quality bowlers. As they say its all in your minds. Link to comment

As they say its all in your minds. If that is the case, they're not perfect technical batsmen, are they now? If you want perfect, you ought to look to guys like Gavaskar, Dravid, Sachin, Ponting, Clarke (as much as I dislike him), Hussey, Chanderpaul, etc. I agree that Viru has been successful with his style of batting, but like Martin Crowe recently said, he's a freakish batsman. Do you actually watch/follow first class cricket, or do you just make completely uninformed snap judgements based on a few Twenty20 performances? Link to comment
