It still means a LOT.

Philander helped his team win series in Eng and Aus along with countless home series.

The spinners that you deride for being just good in Asia kept us at number 1 ranking and helped us reach 2 WTC finals.

Agreed.

He averages 10 in SL against a very good batting attack on flatties.

Averages sub 20 in SA and NZ who had batsmen who were good at facing pace bowlers (which is why most Asian pacers average worse in those countries than in Asia).

Just 4 games. Had a 5fer.

Even if he didn't improve in Aus, that might have been the only country he wouldn't have done well.

The discussion is what he might have been if he hadn't gone down that path.

I used to be in awe of Asif before i even knew what cricinfo stat-filters were.

Dude could just get the ball to do crazy things.

Chances are he would have done great things. But as with everything in life, there are no guarantees.

I would take phil's performance in SA, NZ, Eng with a pinch of salt. all of these pitches greatly aided pace bowlers of his kind. as for SL, he was played selectively on pitches that assisted pacers (there are 1-2 in SL), and SL batting was quite poor by then. Pak had much better batting in comparison in that period.

his performances of Aus in Aus and Ind in Ind are the two main barometers. best 2 teams of that era.

And what's wrong if someone is working at the chappal store salesman ? Not everyone is born to a privileged family with all the resources & money around them. Wasn't Rinku Singh delivering cylinders and Yashasvi was selling panipuris to meet their ends ?

When someone uses these comparisons in a derisive manner, they are clearly trying to insult the player and his looks while also insulting the professions. *They* are the ones who are implying that cricketers should have a certain appearance and people in those other professions should have a certain other appearance and that somehow Mukesh fits those other professions. It's vicious.

Thats fine. Just want to add that Philander actually played a very crucial role in Eng series win on pitches that were purposely flattened out to neutralize Steyn.

Eng pitches were never good for Steyn. at that time, they suited likes of philander much better. look at how praveen and bhuvi coomer did as well
