St stephens 50% reservation for 2% population, iits now can't drive out non-performing students

Two incidents caught my eye yesterday: St. Stefans now has 50% reservation for chrstian students. percentage population of christian in India 2. State funding of st stefan's 100%. By contrast Zamia Milia only reserves 25% against the muslim population percentage of 13%. Both are minority institutes and yes SC does say minority institutes may have reservation as they please for minority section. Second news that caught my attention was: minority commission making iit delhi reconsider its decision of driving out 12 sc/st students for non-performance. Mind you total of 18 students have been driven out 6 of them happen to be of general category. Noone there to shed tears for GC students expulsion andthat's how it should be . In iit kanpur from preparatory courses many sc/st students get dropped routinely after they fail to come to a minimum standard of performance expected from them. So reservation saga has emboldend minority commission to interefer with iit's functioning. God knows where will this stop. First reservation in induction then u can't judge them academically once inducted . I say why the charade of four year education if an institute is not free to judge its students..just award them the b tech degree at the time of conselling itself and get it over with.. Another tamasha news was since iit jee had minimum marks requirement of 30 odd this year in each of physics/chemistry/math ( mind you out of 200 just 30 odd) so some shady dealing imust be on because certain students who technically qualify in aggregate marks could not make due to minimum marks requirement.. Media will make any freaking thing news.. I say if u can't score 30 odd in for instance chemistry and u are stuck with chemical engg, metallurgical engg cermaic engg etc then what are u going to do... U can't really choose the branch u want if your rank is not good enough. I picked the example of chemistry because majority of blokes there if at all are found wanting in chemistry. Fundu in phys/math but when it comes to chemistry are relatively clueless.

Yeah, I read about both issues. Stephen's is THE school when it comes to economics. Reservation is going to seriously hurt the revered brandname of the school. I also read somewhere today that an IIT prof in Kanpur requested documents, pertaining to IIT selection on JEE basis, through RTI act. He found some glaring mistakes in the selection process where deserving candidates, who scored above the cutoff, were not issued admission letters!

My personal thoughts on Reservation is quite clear - there shouldnt be any. The IIT case is a classic example of Reservation system gone wrong. First of all these candidates are "allowed" to enter prestigious institutes even though they are half as good as General candidates(and sorry I dont mince my words on this). Then once they are inside an IIT they get all the possible benefits(read lower fees, more books etc) and even then they underperform. And when they do they can not be kicked out. Heck chances are these underperformers will finish their 4 years and have a prestigious job - say ONGC - waiting for them. This just freaking never ends.

That was the headline and it kind of made me sit up.. the details of that news was that iit should have allowed 1 marks cut off in math 4 in physics similar number in chemistry then only those socalled deserving candidates whose aggrgate mark was beyond the cut-off would have made it.... point was in the overall cut-off they made it but failed in individual cut-off.. to call this some kind of shady dealing is flight of logic...... those students were not issued admisison letters because they failed the cut-off of individual subject and this sounds logical to me.

You left the most sick part of thsi saga lurker.. once they join ONGC they will again under-perfomr still reservation will gayrantee that they supersede the GC candidates in promotion. So an under-performing class-mate of you and I will be our boss..
