Gilly played at 6 or 7 as Ausies at the time had better batters in the lineup. They had likes of Hayden, Langer, Ponting, Damien Martyn, Mark Waugh, Steve Waugh, Mike Hussey etc. at various times. There was no need for him to bat higher up. But in Pant's case he's genuinely a better bat than majority of our specialist batters. In fact other than Jaiswal, I can't think of another who's a better batter than Pant and that's why he's batting at 5.

 

If you push him lower he would run out of support as to play a long innings you need to have batters around you and we all know our tail. They may have done well at Gabba but more often than not we lose wkts in a chunk, especially away from home. Still remember how we collapsed from 155/4 to 155 AO against SA. At home yes it makes sense but away from home Pant needs to come at 5 so he can play a longish innings if he gets in.

Imagine Bumrah having a go at Rohit, Kohli and Gill. If Bumrah had the chance to bowl at us he would be averaging around 12 against us with his overall average closer to 18.
