"The Asia Cup was a one-day match and now Mendis will be in Tests and that too against quality batsmen like Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman who are excellent players of spin bowling. It will be a great contest to watch as well," Vaas told The Times of India. The medium-pacer believes verteran spinner Muralidaran will pose a major threat to the star studded Indian batting line-up. "It will be a mistake to discount Murali. He is the main threat for the Indians,' he further added. Speaking on the Indian bowling attack, Vaas said Ishant Sharma would be the man for India as he has impressed one and all with his express pace and top-arm action. "Ishant Sharma is the man for India. He is tall and has a top-arm action. He is also very quick and I like him. He bowled superbly in Australia earlier this year," Vaas said. Vaas also dismissed concerns that he was losing pace. "I don't know why people refer to my pace all the time. I don't have express pace. In fact, I never had express pace. For me, it's important to swing and pitch the ball in right areas," he remarked.

For the former captain, cricketing fitness is much different from general fitness, and cricketers do not need that level of fitness commonly understood in general parlance. On how he would deal with mystery Sri Lankan spinner Ajantha Mendis in the Tests series starting July 23, he said, "No doubt he is a very good bowler. He bowled really well in the Asia Cup, he also played in the IPL, I have played him in the nets as he was in my team. He is obviously different from other spinners." "But, as players will keep playing him, they will get used to his action and in Test cricket you have ample time to get setteled. Still I think that Muralitharan is a bigger threat than him."
