The Irani Trophy tournament was conceived during the 1959-60 season to mark the completion of 25 years of the Ranji Trophy Championship and is named after the late Z R Irani, who was connected with the Board of Control for Cricket in India from its inception in 1928 till his death in 1970. Before becoming president of the board from 1966 to 1969, Irani was the honorary treasurer (from 1948 to 1962), and one of the vice-presidents from 1963 to 1965. In appreciation of his services to Indian cricket, the BCCI instituted a trophy in his name, to be presented to the winners of a match to be played between the Ranji Trophy champions of the preceding year and a selected Rest of India XI. The first match of the series was played between Bombay and the Rest at the Ferozshah Kotla Ground in Delhi from March 18 to 20, 1960. Though the match was drawn, Bombay were declared winners by virtue of having gained the first innings lead. Brief history of Irani Trophy A peak in its glorious past Padmakar Shivalkar, with 51 wickets, tops the leading bowlers list Rest of India has won it 19 times, four more than Mumbai Gundappa Viswanath (1,001 runs) leads the run-scorers’ list The Irani Cup Club has 403 members with Mumbai’s Ashok Mankad leading a long and distinguished list with 13 appearances followed by Sunil Gavaskar (12), Ajit Wadekar (11), Padmakar Shivalkar (10). Gundappa Viswanath, Eknath Solkar, Dileep Vengsarkar (9 each) and Bhagwat Chandrasekhar, W.V. Raman, Dileep Sardesai, S. Madan Lal and S. Venkatraghavan (8 each) follow in that order. Mumbai’s dominance The dominance of Bombay (now Mumbai) in the Ranji Trophy has been instrumental in its players taking the top three positions. But their and the presence of other stalwarts is a reflection of the importance of the five-day competition long before the International Cricket Council’s packed Future Tour Programme came into being. The good old cricketers regarded the Irani Cup as a step away from the India cap. It was in the Irani Cup at Nagpur in 1975 that Vengsarkar, the present chairman of the selection committee, made a massive impact (110 against Madan Lal, Prasanna and Bedi) before being picked for the tours of New Zealand and West Indies. In elite company Muzumdar, who played his first Irani Cup in 1994-95, and opening batsman Wasim Jaffer are in a select band who have made seven appearances in the Irani Cup. Muzumdar and Jaffer have joined Mohinder ‘Jimmy’ Amarnath, Arun Lal, Abdul Ismail, Kapil Dev, V.V.S. Laxman, Maninder Singh, Sanjay Manjrekar and Milind Rege. Those who have figured in the Irani Cup on six occasions are: Sourav Ganguly, Syed Kirmani, Kirti Azad, Budhi Kunderan, Paras Mhambrey, Nayan Mongia, Sudhir Naik, Ramnath Parkar, Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, Erapalli Prasanna, Ravi Shastri and Navjot Singh Sidhu. Winning the competition six times since the 1999-00 season, Rest of India has taken its tally to 20, four more than Mumbai’s 15. Mumbai last won the Cup 10 seasons ago. Karnataka (4), Delhi and Railways (2), Hyderabad, Tamil Nadu and Haryana (1) also figure in the winner’s scroll. Those who have scored over 500 runs are: Gundappa Viswanath - 1001, Vengsarkar - 779, Mankad - 766, Gavaskar - 733, Wadekar - 717, Laxman - 659, Ravi Shastri - 609, Raman - 578 and Pravin Amre - 503. Those who have captured over 20 wickets are: Shivalkar 51, Chandrasekhar 40, Venkatraghavan, Maninder Singh and Sairaj Bahutule 34 each, Kapil Dev and Anil Kumble 28 each, Murali Kartik and Shastri 27 each, Prasanna 25, Bapoo Nadkarni and Abdul Ismail 21 each. Nayan Mongia holds the wicketkeeper’s record for dismissals with 23 catches and two stumpings, while in the non-wicketkeeper category Wadekar (14), Laxman (13), Solkar and Muzumdar (12 each), M. Kartick (11) and Arun Lal (10) turned out to be competent fielders.

More... Tiwary eyes Irani Trophy to stage a comeback Tuesday, August 26, 2008 6:24:01 PM Kolkata: Having briefly experienced the Team India dressing room atmosphere following a fruitful domestic season and then slowly fading into oblivion after a shoulder injury sustained during the Bangladesh tour in 2007, Manoj Tiwary has learnt a few lessons, the hard way. The stylish Bengal batsman underwent a surgery in London and made a forgetful comeback, scoring two against Australia in the tumultuous series Down Under earlier this year. Ignored for India A's three-match home series against Australia 'A', Tiwary fresh from his stint with the 'A' team in the Emerging Players Tournament in Australia, now looks ahead to Irani Trophy. Practising religiously with coach Mandab Ghosh, the 22-year-old, in fact, sees the "phase" at the sidelines as a blessing in disguise. ""Missing out of India A squad is disappointing. But, this happens in every sportperson's life. Selection is not in my hands. What is in my hand, however, is to score runs. It's just a matter of a good score. In fact, I've become more resolute now. I'm looking forward to the Irani Trophy to produce some good knocks and back in the reckoning again," Tiwary told PTI. "Everybody knows what I deserve and if I have potential or not. It's difficult producing hundreds in each match for a middle-order batsman. But selectors want to see scores on paper... "In fact, I didn't perform that badly in Australia, having scored an unbeaten 60 in India's winning cause against New Zealand in the Emerging Players Tournament. But opener Virat (Kohli) sparkled in the match with a 120 not out," he went on to add. The Bengal batsman was contemplating for a while to quit playing for the state, languishing in the Plate Division this Ranji Trophy season. However, the Jagmohan Dalmiya-led Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) convinced him to play for the state and, in turn, Tiwary gave a written pledge to help Bengal "give back his glory days". "Bengal have given me so much ... What I am now is because of Bengal. Now, the time has come to give something back to the home state. And this is the right opportunity. If my performance powers Bengal to Elite Division, I'll once again be considered," Tiwary, who had led Bengal to a Cooch Behar Trophy last season, added. Disagreeing the notion that it's difficult for a player in Plate Division to make a mark at the national level, the right-hander gave examples of India ODI captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and S. Sreesanth. "Look at Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Jharkhand/Bihar) and Sreesanth (Kerala)... If they could come up so far then won't I be able to do the same? The yardstick is performance," Tiwary, who helped Delhi Daredevils to last four round in the inaugural Indian Premier League, added.

chandan are they going to show on neo sports in India??? last year they did
I'm sure they'll show it. right now Neo is not telecasting anything , so it'll pounce on live action and that too cricket. Plus if ROI selects all the probable test players like they had done in 2003, it'll be as good as a test match, isn't it? Delhi will have Sehwag, Gambhir, Ishant along with Chopra, Dhawan, Kohli and a few others while the ROI will have Jaffer, Dravid, Sachin if fit, Ganguly, Badri, Dhoni, Zaheer, Munaf, Kumble, Harbhajan etc. It should be quite interesting if they choose the team on these lines!

yep this will be a great game to watch, Indian test side with out sehwag and gambhir will feature as rest of India. it would be interesting to see who will open for rest of India since both the openeres will be playing for Delhi. Jaffer is there offcourse, along with him there would be perahzp some ranji player, or they might ask Dravid again, which won't be good

This match could be just as good as that '04 Irani Trophy game since Delhi have a number of international players and some top class domestic players in their XI, much like Mumbai did back then. For those who don't remember that game, here is the scorecard; http://usa.cricinfo.com/db/ARCHIVE/2003-04/IND_LOCAL/IRANI/BOM_R-O-I_IRANI_18-22SEP2003.html If Dhawan isn't fit for this one, who will replace him ? Akram’s cricket skills camp from Sept 3, 2008 Here to impart some tips to budding youngsters, the former Pakistan captain also announced his association with a pace academy to be launched by Cradle Sports in association with the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA). More... Akram’s cricket skills camp from tomorrow NEW DELHI: Pakistan legend Wasim Akram is looking for a bigger role in Delhi cricket. Here to impart some tips to budding youngsters, the former Pakistan captain also announced his association with a pace academy to be launched by Cradle Sports in association with the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA). “We have great pleasure in announcing this joint initiative between the DDCA and Cradle Sports. The Wasim Akram Pace Academy will improve upon and better the MRF Pace Academy. The idea is to have a legend train the young kids,” said DDCA Sports Secretary, Sunil Dev. A cricket skills camp by Akram will be organised to train upcoming fast bowlers from schools in Delhi. The camp, scheduled for September 3 and 4, will involve the top 10-15 youngsters from the Capital and will be monitored on a progressive basis by Cradle Sports and DDCA. “These workshops would be held on a sustained basis. The School Cricket League (under-16) will start from October 1 and would be used as a platform to select the State team in that group so that all biases are removed,” said Dev. Akram noted, “The idea is to help youngsters develop and improve upon their skills and what better platform than an academy of this nature. Initiatives like this need to be carried on a sustainable basis and corporate should come ahead and support in a big way.” Akram will be assisted by former India Test off-spinner Nikhil Chopra, who is also a State senior selector.

Looks like the history will be repeated here. Rest of India team Mumbai: The Rest of India squad, which would take on Ranji Trophy champions Delhi in the Irani Trophy tie later this month, would be a virtual Test side. “The selectors would be picking a virtual Test side, barring those belong to Delhi, when selecting the Rest of India team for the Irani tie, slated at Vadodara from September 24-28,” BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah said on Monday from Rajkot. And Dhawan will recover by then. He has been out only for 2 weeks which means till 11th September. After that 13 more days are enough to train and regain the touch. So Delhi should be full strength. We have to get rid of that now" © AFP Wasim Akram, the former Pakistan fast bowler and captain, is in Delhi to conduct a fast-bowling camp for promising youngsters in the capital. The camp, a joint initiative between the Delhi District Cricket Association (DDCA) and Cradle Sports, will be held on September 2 and 3 and will involve up to 15 players. "The Wasim Akram Pace Academy will improve upon and better the MRF Pace Academy [in Chennai]," Sunil Dev, the DDCA secretary, said. "The idea is to have a legend train the young kids. "These workshops will be held on a sustained basis. The School Cricket League [for Under-16s] will start from October 1 and will be used as a platform to select the state team in that group so that all biases are removed." Akram, who will be assisted by the former Indian offspinner Nikhil Chopra, said it's important to train youngsters to adjust to different pitches and conditions. "We look at pitches putting Australia as the benchmark. We have to get rid of that now," Akram said. "It's only in the mind. We too had similar conditions to play with. Pace is the most important thing and nothing else matters. "The idea is to help youngsters develop and improve upon their skills and what better platform than an academy of this nature. Initiatives like this need to be carried on a sustainable basis and corporates should come forward and support it in a big way."

Veterans face Irani Trophy test The Rest of India squad to take on Ranji Trophy champions Delhi in the September 24-28 Irani Cup tie in Vadodara will be picked in Mumbai on September 8. The squad would be a virtual Test side barring those who would be representing Delhi like Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and Ishant Sharma. More... Veterans face Irani Trophy test Harish Kotian September 04, 2008 17:42 IST India's senior batsmen will be looking to get back among the runs when Rest of India takes on Ranji Trophy champions Delhi [images] in the September 24-28 Irani Cup tie in Vadodara. While Delhi boasts of a strong side, with Team India regulars like Virender Sehwag [images], Gautam Gambhir [images] and Ishant Sharma, India's Test stars, and those on the fringe of making it to the Test team, are expected to be picked in the Rest of India squad, which will be named in Mumbai on September 8. "The selectors will be picking a virtual Test side, barring those belonging to Delhi, when selecting the Rest team," BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah had said a few days ago. The season-opening domestic fixture has assumed importance following a poor showing of some senior batsmen on the just-concluded tour of Sri Lanka, which saw India lose the Test series 1-2. Thus, the focus will be on Rahul Dravid [images], Sachin Tendulkar [images] and Sourav Ganguly [images], who all struggled for runs in the three Tests. They are hoping to regain form and be picked for the all-important four-Test series against Australia [images], beginning on October 9. Anil Kumble [images] will, in all probability, lead Rest of India, but the focus will be on Mahendra Singh Dhoni [images], who opted out of the Test series in Sri Lanka [images], citing fatigue. Though coach Gary Kirsten had hinted on Tuesday that Dhoni is ready to take over from Kumble as Test captain, it is unlikely that the selectors will take away the reins from Kumble for such a high-profile series, as the ace leg spinner did lead the Test team with distinction during the controversy-marred tour of Australia. The match could turn out to be make or break game for Ganguly as youngsters like Suresh Raina and Rohit Sharma are in form and desperate to grab any opportunity that comes their way.

Tendulkar to play Irani Trophy Cricinfo staff September 6, 2008 http://content-ind.cricinfo.com/india/content/current/story/368523.html Sachin Tendulkar has declared himself fit for the coming season and will play the Irani Trophy match between Ranji Trophy champions Delhi and Rest of India starting on September 24 in Baroda. "I have recovered totally and am feeling fine," said Tendulkar. "I will play in the Irani Trophy match against the Ranji Trophy champions Delhi." Tendulkar has been troubled by injury this year - first hurting his groin during the Tests against South Africa and then his left elbow, which ruled him out of the ODIs in Sri Lanka last month. With no international fixtures ahead of the Test series against Australia, starting October 9, several national players will be available for the season-opening Irani Trophy, a match which will feature probables for the Australia series. It is expected to be a keen contest, with the Delhi squad including Test regulars Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag and Ishant Sharma, youngsters Virat Kohli and Pradeep Sangwan as well as former Test opener Aakash Chopra. Meanwhile, apart from Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble could all feature in the Rest of India squad.

Ishant cleared for full training and match play Ishant Sharma should be in action in the 2008-09 Zal Irani Cup opening match between Delhi and Rest of India at Baroda from September 24 to 28. More... Ishant cleared for full training and match play Sunday, Sep 07, 2008 Mumbai: Ishant Sharma should be in action in the 2008-09 Zal Irani Cup opening match between Delhi and Rest of India at Baroda from September 24 to 28. According to Paul Close, physio at the Bangalore-based National Cricket Academy, the Delhi paceman has recovered fully from a right buttock bruise and has been cleared for full training and to play matches. Close has said in a report to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that it is upto the Indian team management to review his bowling workload. Ishant limped off the field in the course of the third Idea Cup Test series against Sri Lanka in early August and subsequent diagnosis through MRI revealed that he had suffered a right buttock muscle contusion. He was at the NCA after the third Test for injury assessment and again reported to Close last Thursday for further assessment.
