In normal flood Bihar gets inundated this time it's rare event of river changing its course . In coming weeks situation is going to get worse since Nepal has release more water.

Flood rages Bihar, millions displaced, Biharis fleeing to Nepal... About time a thread was started on this. Over 2.5 million BIharis displaced by rampaging flood. Kids have been stuck inside school for weeks. Biharis have fled north to Nepal since thats where better releif facilities are(another feather in the cap for next Superpower of the world)...and now Nepalese Government is sending them back!!! Bihar CM calls it Pralay, erstwhile CM calls it Maha-pralay. Meanwhile leading parties are busy chasing Geelani in Kashmir and church/temple miscreants in Orissa. Nationally of course Dhoni and his team occupy centre slot for winning ODI. Mera Bharat Mahaan :isalute:

Appears we both started the thread at the same time. MODS please merge it. What exactly is the role of Nepal in these floods. I hear both sides of the story. They are bad elements as well as good samaritan. If Bihar builds a large dam, or a combination of small ones, will that be a perennial solution? How does that affect India-Nepal border?

Scale of destruction is at Tsunami level......... Can't reach my parents since last three days even bloody cell-phone tower is down.. I am relatively calm because have seen these events little too many times and am sure they must have mvoed to first floor from ground floor..

I am sorry to hear that man. I hope all's well. You are correct in people have gotten a bit used to this and are hence normally prepared. Where's your family at? I have a few relatives near Nepal border and they are all incommunicado at this point.

BTW large blame goes to Nepal when barrage was about to go down indian engineers reached their for repair work but communist regime shooed away indian contingent........ Indian govt is helpless here they can't do anything nepal govt is not cooperating.. every day 200-300 meters of additional barrage is getting wiped out

Yes Nepal does share the blame in the sense that it releases water from its dam that ends up in the rivers of Bihar, which during the course of a strong monsoon will then ravage the state. Especially rivers like Kosi and Kamla Balan which not only change courses but also at a breathtaking pace. The question is how much can Nepal control? If they do not release water do they expect some problems of their own?? Unless we stop water at the source I fail to see the impact the embankments will have on the Indian side.

Story is like this.... Kosi river is relatively young so bound to change its course wherever not embanked properly. Nepal/India govt is basically forcing it to run through western part of Biar while its natural stream should have bene towards eastern side.. . In this case particularly in sursari there was a huge barrage built in 60's and whose official life expired in 2003. Basically continuous patch work was on to extend its life.. State adminsitration knew ( central adminstration doesn't care) and had sent its team of enginers and water-body management officials to Nepal in order to stregthen the barrage but project got stalled due to Nepali side's objection to what share of money will be spent how and who will get how much of the fund released for this purpose........ Over this bickering state govt's team returned ...higher level intervention was needed but before that could materialize barrage gave way to water pressure.. Even Nepal is sufferring it's not like they are merry making.. Basically red-tape over the barrage management has created this problem..... Given it's unprecedented event state govt could not sound the alarm bells the way it should have .. once it failed in its effort to strengthen the barrage.. Even Nepal doesn't stand to gain after all barrage was in their territory.. it's basicaly result of stupid red-tape and bickering over small matters which has created this calamity..... Finally got to speak to my brother he has had communication with my parents they are fine ...my area is not affected that much my nanaji's place ismore in the midst of it all.. Hopefully everything will be fine.. see those who have mutli-storey brick-house more often than not are safe poor folks with earthen walled house bear the brunt... most of them will be homeless since once water enters within days walls fall down... There is no permanent soln other than may be planning those highways properly which turn out to be impediment to water flow... BEcause water will come all u can do is to make sure that water level subsides sooner than later... and may be large scale dredging of river beds in order to increase its water carrying capability.

This is utterly disgusting. Most of the Indians are busy boasting about how India will be the next global superpower, but I hardly see anything we Indians are doing to ensure we truly become the next global power. Local Ministers' goons will come out on the road if their beloved father is eliminated out of Big Boss, but these goons are nowhere to be seen to protest against the low quality drainage system that is one of the major reasons why a heavy rainfall turns into a horrific flood. Raj Thackarey is busy fighting with the Supreme Court to get "marathi number plates", why exactly is he not protesting against the same reason which I mentioned above. Surely the government cannot control the amount of rainfall but they can certainly step on Municipality's tail to make them fix/place a proper drainage system. I am truly surprised about no one standing up to the government at the end of Rainy season because floods have been creating a lot of havoc in the past 4-5 years. Its about time our public takes a good advantage of so called Democracy.

You concers are appreciated but our home has been spared from koshi fury but still there is no news from our nanaji's place.. They will be fine I am sure .. Nitish Kumar is going to lose big time because even likes of laloo whose refrain during floods used to be " it's good because even poor get to eat fish in this season" Shamelessly all those who are supposed to help people have been hoggin one boat each for their family.. DM SP DY SP BDO anyone who is anybody in Madhepura reason has kept one boat parked near his house while people are drowning....... Situation this time is beyond the regular flood event where in every village few houses are spared by waters and they work as refugee camp.. this time there is no such luck and govt machinery is not prepared for it....

Good to hear your family is okay DR. Have heard some real horrendous story, including a family stuck in the house, the man of the family charging his cellphone by starting the motorcycle once a day. After 5 days they ran out of petrol..and patience. Weatherwise looks like rain has stopped so I guess thats some sort of good news.

This is really sad....did not know about this till now and after reading some of the news sources it seems like the relief effort has been usual. Government anoucing a lot of aid but not sure who will actually pocket it... Here is a map of the flood area... http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=kosi+bihar+india&ie=UTF8&ll=26.00619,86.161652&spn=0.548001,1.230469&t=h&z=10&iwloc=A
See flood is usual thign in bihar and going by all the relief pakcage being diled in last 2 years of Nitish Kumar I can vouch for one thign he is efficient in that and has made sure corruption on the msot part is non-existant.. last year he distributed 100 kg foodgrains and 2000 rs across the board in flood affected areas.. even my father was offered which he donated to my driver Md Ali.. So i am aure the eventual aid package will be delivered but point is the instantaneous rescue misison for which govt doesn;t seem to ready at all .. given they were taken by total surprise.. thsi is not your normal flood. this is disaster
