This is one for you travel experts. I am comimg over to see 2 one dayers in november (Kanpur & Jamshedpur) and would like advice on getting from Jamshedpur early morning to catch a flight to delhi from Kolkata at about 08.55am. I have looked at the trains but they all leave to early or too late, would you reccomend a taxi? would it be expensive? hope someone can help.

Taxis are going to be pretty darn expensive. If I had to make a guess(and take it with a grain of salt) you may end up shelling about Rs 15,000(400$) or thereabouts. The charges will be high because of the sheer distance and also the fact that the driver will claim that he would have to return empty from that far. What I would do is catch the train in late evening say 7:45 or so, have a good night sleep en-journey. My personal favorite was Geetanjali that would start around 9 pm if I remember correctly and reach somewhere around 2-2:30 am. There are couple of more express trains, one around midnight Koraput Howrah Express that reaches Calcutta around 7 am(starts around midnight).So if you are adventurous you may want to try the second one. I would recommend you look for those 2 trains Geetanjali Koraput Express. xxx

Why Jamshepur doesn't have an airport having flights to either Delhi or Kolkata? Other cities in India have excellent Bus services. ITDC might operate private buses between cities. I know about South India. All of Hyderabad, Chennai, B'lore to remore towns are connected by buses. These are not your old govt buses. They are Volvo buses with lean-back seats (like in an airplane coach class) or sleeper seats too (like an airplane first class). They usually operate in the night, so you can reach fresh in the morning. Thye cost as much as trains or even more.

^^ yep buses can be a good alternative too. You can catch them from Sakchi bus stand, and I am very sure that you can get one towards the evening. However I am not so sure about the timing. I beleive an Airport is on the way, as of now its not functional.

Thanks Lurker, i think catching an evening train would be great, does the match finish about 5pm? if it does the first option would be perfect, sleep in the airport till the early flight.

This means that the cricket stadium,Keenan Stadium, is one of those which doesnt support infrastructure for D/N facilities. Thus you would be in luck as the match start time is 9 am. Even accounting for delayed start it should be up and running around 10 am. Assuming 8 hours of total play time you are looking at 5-6 pm. Which means you should be able to get out comfortably by 6-7 pm(and yes the crowd would be a LOT). I checked and there are a couple of trains around 9 pm from Tata to Calcutta. Some of these that you may want to check out. Jnaneshwari Delux. Starts at 23:40 pm and reaches Calcutta around 3:35 am. Azad Hind Express. Starts midnight(0.02 am) and reaches Calcutta around 3:50 am. You should be able to catch these two trains since you would have about 5 hours of buffer time. Also both these trains originate from Tatanagar(Jamshedpur) so getting tickets should be easy(in India trains are often overbooked). Still I would encourage to check these two train timings, workout your plan and get reservations in place. xxx
