The first ever inter city train line in India was between Mumbai and Pune. A lot of people had raised similar concerns then: why spend money on trains? Why not spend it to feed the poor. No, first lets fix rail transportation INSIDE the cities and then start looking outside. Millions use the Mumbai suburban trains everyday. A few thousand may end up using the Bombay-Pune rail Link. The domino effect of giving millions of people access to fast, effecient and affordable suburban transportation in one of the biggest, crowdiest cities in the world will be far far greater than having a few thousand people travel between Mumbai and Pune in a short time I speak purely from a socio-economic standpoint. Whichever way we look at it, our priority in the next 25 years must be to improve suburban transportion, city sanitation and highways. If those things happen, everything else will fall into place.

And you've spoken like a true anti-westerner or one with a complex. Show me where or how 'any kind of infrastructure' is looked down upon. You do realize that this comment of yours is inapplicable here, since most western nations themselves deem bullet trains to be too much of a financial burden just to show off or provide hyper-comfort for the ultra-rich ? The west, atleast socially, is very anti-economic gaps developing in the society of widening. One of their criticism and rightly so, is the stunning gap of quality of life affordable in India today and the relative non-chalance at injuries to life and limb there. I wonder how necessary this project would be or what would be its cost-turnover time from revenues and if its worthwhile an investment or just a show-pony for chest-thumping purposes, since Indians these days love to show-off or chest-thump over the slightest of step forward.

Lots of places to fraud the money. Once all this gets settled, the tender will be accepted - and that will probably be sometime in the year 2020. I'll believe it when it happens. Untill then - it's the expressway for me.

Times change and along with it, priorities.
