Watson and Haddins started off sledging in this series at bangalore , at the first sign of an indian fight back( Zak & Bhaji stand). Yes thats the difference here ... Ganguly's sledging was more subtle and witty and he managed to agitate the Aussies as much as anyone else. The key with sledging is that the person that does it can not lose his cool. Gambhir clearly did. Look at Steve Waugh ... he was constantly sledging but anytime they showed his face ... he was cool, calm and collected.
