Full suits are given to people like PM and president. But in combat, they restrict mobility. They mostly wear half jackets, which they are using now. I think the early deaths of of the officers is a result of carelessness. They probably did not realize hos big it is and ran in under prepared to save the people and got shot. If they knew the seriousness and how well prepared the terrorists were, they would not have been killed. That's what I think.

There should be complete bulletproof suits, but are probably not suitable for moving combat... also, cricket talk?

The proliferation of high-quality body armor has begun to make guns that fire pistol ammunition (such as HK's earlier MP5 or USP) ineffective. In response to this trend, HK designed the MP7 (along with the brand new UCP, which uses the same ammunition) to penetrate body armor, but small enough to be used in place of either a pistol or a submachine gun.

Atleast they should give them upper body suits and covered helmets for head/neck cover. Seems like Karkare was shot in the neck. Really sad, senior officials with vast experience are lost to these wild dogs who killed them. If only bullet proof helmets were worn to cover the head and neck. I do understand they may have underestimated the opponents. Sad.

Its portable, lightweight, works very smooth with a powerful silencer, can pierce most bullet proof vests, has got semi zoom and hence has a high accuracy rate, fires many bullets in a second (half as powerful and fast as a machine gun) and it does not shake much while firing. One of the most dangerous weapons around.

The government has finally agreed to demands of the police for improved quality of bullet proof jackets but there may be problems in delivery. "We need nearly 1,00,000 more such jackets. It will take another one year when we will have bullet proof jacket with improved qualitative requirements. It will be by end of year 2009," said Bureau of Police Research and Development Chief K Koshy. The new jackets are likely to be lighter with more body coverage and highly defensive against any ballistic attack. "The weight of the bullet proof jacket will be less, trauma level will be less and will cover more area of the body," Koshy said adding, "Work has begun towards redrafting the new qualitative requirements." Police normally use two types of jacket--one made of special cloth (Kevlar) that reduces the impact of bullet coming from small weapons like 9 mm pistol. For the automatic weapons, another triple layered jacket is used by the force which gives extra protection from AK series rifles, SLR or self loading rifle, light machine guns. Weighing about 10 kilograms, it is made of three special plates of bullet proof steel, ceramic plates and polyethylene plates. "The present jacket is not acceptable to police who were reluctant to wear them even during Mumbai and Jamia Nagar encounters," a senior police official said adding, "It is very uncomfortable and it does not guarantee safety from any ballistic attack."

Its cat and mouse ... they will come up with a better jacket and then with a better gun .. and it will continue
