fineleg Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Folks, Can you recommend good, free software for: 1. Antivirus 2. Antispyware/malware (have Lavasoft and spybot, but they seem to have lost bite) 3. Firewall 4. Anything else? (Tor?) I used to have Norton AV and later eTrust (CA) but I'd like to move to free software if it works well. Also, I used to have ZoneAlarm firewall but that has problem with my antivirus, so some issue - I want to move to a good stack of security software that just does the job well.
fineleg Posted December 18, 2008 Author Posted December 18, 2008 This one: http://free.avg.com/ "Free basic protection"?
DomainK Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Yes. AVG. I have been using it for a long time and I am quite happy. Light on resources, very efficient and damn well updated definitions. Anri-spyware: Cant think of anything better than lavasoft in the free category. Also try yahoo. If you download and install yahoo toolbar, you will find a button for anti-spyware. Click on it to download and install it. Everything happens from the toolbar itself. Its quite good.
fineleg Posted December 18, 2008 Author Posted December 18, 2008 i got one suggestion for "Malware Bytes" - anyone tried that? (Its not antivirus, but anti-malware)
panesarv Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Avast is the best. AVG was branded as a malware a while ago. Malware Bytes has been getting very good reviews. Definitely worth a try. Avast + Zonealarm for me. Not a problem till date.

Avast + Zonealarm for me. Not a problem till date. And who branded avg as malware? I have never read a bad review about AVG. I have been using it, many of my friends have been using it. We all are quite tech savvy. I never saw anything out of place with AVG. One proof that AVG is not malware is the fact that its available for download on download.com- a CNET website. CNET (and in turn download.com) is one of the best reviewers of software. The CNET editor has praised AVG and has recommended it strongly. And I trust their opinion (and mine). BTW, another very good AV is NOD32. The best around perhaps. But its not free.
vadodaravictor Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 I installed Avira antivirus on my parent's laptop and it seems to be working very well. On anti-malware side, how about Microsoft's Windows Defender ?? it is free for xp & vista
Sachinism Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 you need AVG Spybot search and destroy CCleaner

Lurker Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Nothing in life is free. Get Kaspersky. About 40$ a year, your laptop would be 25-30 times that worth. Do the maths.

Doesnt apply in the world of software and internet. There is a damn good free alternative for most paid software. I am gonna open a thread on freeware.
