The concepts of blasphemy, Satan, Devil. Hellfire etc. are alien to Dharma, IMVHO.

Nothing specific in RikVed which prohibits consumption of meat. Still Brahminism in Hinduism prefers vegetarianism due to sheer non-violent nature of Dharma which considers all living beings as consciousnesses in various states. Celibacy is encouraged not compulsory though. sandtest Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 Cow slaughter is generally abhored by Hindus, it's not just Vaishnav sampraday tradition. Kashmir Shivaism too discourages killing of Cows. The abode of Cows is referred as GoLoka in Bhagwad Puran/Markandeya Puran and widely believed as greater than Vaikunth (i.e. Abode of Lord Vishnu Himself). Only these Purans ask expilicitly for protection of Cows. Also Cow dung and Cow urine (Go Mutra) is held as essentail samagri in any havan/yagna involving Vedic sacrifices. There is a Yagna in RikVeda where Rishi offers Aditi (the supreme Nature) a potion of Ghee (Butter Milk) through Cow and compares Cow as embodiment of Aditi (Prakriti herself). many villages in north India where resources are scarce use Cow dung as primary source of domestic cooking fuel. Also painting of walls of clay houses is done by using cow dung which is considered as a good dis-infectant having strong anti-fungus characteristics. Legally, Cow slughter is not encouraged in many Indian states including Kaangress ruled one. Except Kerala and West Bengal which are ruled by Communist parties of India.

kumble_rocks Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 I think it is silly to ban cow slaughter. One can easily replace cow with goat and justify the same utility of the animal. Either you are a vegetarian or a non vegetarian . End of story.
