I heard more on this on the radio: The fatwa is not issued against yoga as a exercise, rather it's aimed to eliminating the Hindu religious connotations associated with yoga such as the chanting on 'Om' / 'Shiva' etc. In this country where 90 percent of the population are Muslim, its a big no no for muslim's to get involved in religious activities other than Allah They also passed a fatwa on smoking and voting peace and chicken grease

If you are refering to the Sukarno/Suharto purges, then it was not Islamist in nature but nationalist, though they may have played on religious fears to instigate the people.
