suraj Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Infact I watched "Angels..." last Sunday, I watched until Chapter 3 then I felt a li'l bit bored and stopped. Is it really gud after that, coz barring a few scenes I didnt like it that much. Meryl Streep won an Actors Guild award for that. She is an excellent actress. Do you know John Cazale?, better Fredo in Godfather, Sal in Dog Day... he was the one responsible for wat she is now. Sadly, Cazale died very young, infact Pacino called him his acting partner. Cazale helped set up the careers of Streep and de Niro. He died of cancer and was married to Streep until his death. He was one of the best supporting actors, but has acted only in six films.All his films have won atleast an Oscar and that is a record in itself. But Kamal, even in movies such as Virumandi, whether a bit more of overaction wouldn't be criticized, chose to show the subleties of the character and is/was/will be a LOT more natural than Sivaji ever was. Even in Padayappa, which is one of his more calmer performances, the scene where he passes away near the pillar of his house was overdone [and when he's being kicked out of the house, etc']. I have respect for him, but for me, no one can beat Kamal Hassan in acting -not Naseeruddin Shah, not Nana Patekar, not even the Malayalam legends. I completely agree no one in India (atleast the ones I have seen) can come close to Kamal in acting, and I always felt Sivaji overacted a lot, but an interesting observation is that in one of his interviews he (Sivaji) was asked this question about his over acting, his answer was very revealing, he said, he comes from a stage actors background, on stage they were taught and told over and over to be very expressive because the people who sit on the last rows can hardly see any subtle emotions, so he was trained to show a lot more body language and voice modulations etc, the same when shot on close up and seen on screen comes out as blatant over acting.

Just as a comparison to some of his contemporaries, however, NTR/ANR (or from the Tamil industry, MGR) all acted in a much more subtle way. If one watches NTR from any of the pouranika movies, then it might seem that he puts in too much emotions for a particular character but I'd definitely argue that for the characters he played as Krishna or Ravana, etc. can not be portrayed in a better manner. And I don't think any one has bettered Nageshwar Rao's 'Devdas' ever - and in that movie, subtle dialogues, and strong emotions but you never feel like he was an actor on stage. I think Sivaji is unique in that he was very comfortable acting in several different type of characters, and my only gripe was that it seldom seemed natural - though I will say that I really did enjoy Thillana Mohanambal. With MGR, I really liked his performance in Anbe Vaa - thought it was a very nice movie. The sceneries shown were brilliant in that movie.

riya Posted April 25, 2009 Author Posted April 25, 2009 I enjoy kamal films but won't rate him above Mohanlal at his peak .Kamal showed shades of many actors like Brando,Pacino or Hoffman in many charcters he played.He tried to copy these actors intentinally or unintentionally some times .AS for Lal he is all his own .He had charcteristics of his own .Always natural.Kamal is great .It is just that i rate Lal above him .And yes bias is a factor too:winky:

I can't believe someone here has watched Glengarry Glen ross, I thought I was the only one... Dustin Hoffman is another great actor who doesn't get enough credit. I am surprised no one mentioned Morgan Freeman and Tom Hanks. Very good too....high quality.
