Temujin Khaghan Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 He's composed a LOT of songs dude. Quite often' date=' the tunes that he reused in Telugu (or vice-versa) are from relatively unknown films. Actually, it didn't really matter for Ilayaraja whether the film was dubbed or not. Chiranjeevi's Rudraveena was remade in Tamil with Kamal, and the tunes he used were not the same.[/quote'] hey so whats your stand? are you saying that ilayaraja was just like the modern day south indian music directors and he rotated his songs regularly like ARR and the lesser known manisharma and devisri? or are you saying that, yes he did it... but not on a regular basis... and that a lot of his tunes in one language are relatively unknown to his admirers in the other? mine is the latter one. P.S - Kamal's movie was remade into rudraveena. not the other way round.
graphic23 Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 My stand is that your initial point that he doesnt use tunes that he composed for one language in another is false. Because he did. I have nothing to say about Devi Sri Prasad or Mani Sharma because I dont consider 90% of their tunes to be good in the first place. WRT ARR, I have listened to quite a few albums of his, and have not noticed what you say.

WRT ARR' date= I have listened to quite a few albums of his, and have not noticed what you say.it is nice to hear so many great songs from tamil films. I think the greatness from ilayaraja is that once he creates a tune for a certain movie in a language' date=' he will never use the same tune in any other language. [b']Well maybe he did it rarely. Here's sharing some telugu songs... my favourite ones. there is a difference between saying he never does it and saying he does something rarely. now leaving all the songs which are part of the movies which are dubbed or remade. I said that for movies which are only made only for a single regional language, ilayaraja was never too eager to rotate them and use them in another language in another different movie. i never said that he never did it. i said he did it rarely. haha nice try
graphic23 Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 alright, let me get you a video of where his brother and SPB claim the opposite of what you just said.
graphic23 Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 Here you go: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCPq5sqm0l8&feature=player_embedded# Listen to it around 2:00. Again, I never claimed that he always does it (or that you claimed that he never does it). I said he does generally use some tunes that he composed for telugu in Tamil and vice-versa. There's nothing to feel bad in it - they're all his compositions. I dont see why thats an insult, when the tunes are amazing. ARR used some of his own songs and remastered them and produced them in the same language. Did you know Maa Tujhe Salaam (Thai Mannai Vanakkum) was not really made for this song? It was another sung. Similarly, in the same album, Vande Mataram, there's a song called Musafir, which has the Chikubuku Chikubu tune.. exactly the same. That is unfortunate. I didn't accuse anyone of anything, I said its untrue that he "rarely" does it - because he did use some of his tunes with some amount of regularity.
Temujin Khaghan Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 ^ bro, i did not consider that an accusation or anything. i was just discussing thatsall. see actually what you said is true a lot of ilayaraja's common tunes can be heard in telugu and in tamil. But what iam saying is that now minus all the albums which are remakes or dubbings. minus all the geetanjali, nayagan, aradhana, chanti, agni nakshatram, dalapathi, anjali... all those common movies. Now there are movies like aakhari poratam, bobbili raja, alapana (dubbed?), abhilasha, aaditya 369, challenge etc... Now you wont find these tunes in tamil. you wouldnt really find tapes for these albums in tamil. I am talking about these movies. All I am saying is that he rarely used tunes from tamil to telugu or vice-versa for stand-alone regional movies. There are a lot of superhit tracks in telugu which none of my tamil friends at school never heard of. Hearing a lot of tamil songs in the youtube is like a fresh experience for me. I never heard them in telugu. Why I feel its something to feel proud about: Because ilayaraja has treated every new music sitting as a fresh experience. He tried to envision the scene, the sequence, the setting and the mood, the tastes of the director and tried to comeup with a new tune for a certain situation. Because he did not have a predetermined idea all the time in his head to use a certain tune or to make the best of his hit tune in another language and thereby relieve himself of creating something new as per the situation demands. Its not something to feel bad about. Because its his tune and can use it as many times as he wants. But i find his passion to do something new all time (during his prime) and not resorting to the easy road very admirable.

I didn't accuse anyone of anything, I said its untrue that he "rarely" does it - because he did use some of his tunes with some amount of regularity. ARR is in very high demand and that combined with his pace of working and international projects, he hardly has time for more than 2~3 projects a year. IIRC, in an interview, he said that ideally he wouldnt have done the "re-mastered" version of his songs in another language but since it was helping a friend out, he didnt mind. 10 years back, ARR name on a movie was a much bigger draw in Tamil sans Rajini. He was huge so directors took whatver scrap they could. Otherwise, crap movies like Jodi (which has some hindi original tunes) wouldnt be possible. Besides, why does it matter anyway? Bombay dreams is basically english lyrics to his works but its still his work. It all comes down to time. Illayaraja could do 100 songs a year but Rahman is often said to tweak his work up until the last moment. Also, I believe that Illayaraja's strength was in his tunes and not music itself (which was often garish and disconnected to the song) which led to simpler development cycle. But even then, i am sure Illayaraja, had he had the time, would have worked more on his songs to make it better, something Rahman has been adamant about.

IMO, Too many projects => mediocre music isn't a valid excuse. Then again, Rahman's a bit like Sachin in that even when he gave tremendous tunes, the directors ruined the film, and the music didn't get much recognition. Bose being one of those films. There are tons of movies in Telugu and Tamil which have excellent music, and are very very awful films. Even Mani Ratnam's Iruvar was disappointing compared to how brilliant the soundtrack was. Nevertheless, I agree with the rest of your post, barring the last paragraph. What does "strength was in his tunes and not music itself" mean? I'm being genuinely curious here as I dont understand what that means. If you mean to say that his orchestration is not as good as his tunes, I guess we have different tastes.

Iruvar, IMO, is one of the best Indian movies. Yes, we do have different tastes. Anyway, by tune i meant the melody of the song or lyrics. By music, i meant the instruments score.
achilles Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 I don't get a word of the songs but they sound good.

fineleg Posted October 2, 2010 Author Posted October 2, 2010 I would encourage everyone to listen to this composition. Simply superb. You dont need to understand the language, since music is universal. Movie Hey Ram (Kamal Hassan) Composition by Ilayaraja Brilliantly sung by a Bengali: Ajay Chakraborthy (Hindustani classical genius, originally from Bangladesh I believe). ox0gJGCasZc Another song: Rani Mukherjee is awesome, and Asha Bhosle's voice! Amazing! rLyW1KN7ZuU&feature=related hLuNCzkszpA Another Power song by Maestro Ilayaraja from "Naan Kadavul" Om Siva Om Om - Vijay Prakash qAfZUCS8bQM
