Listen to a lot of older stuff (things like Clapton, Dire Straits, old Metallica/Sabbath, etc) and prefer the sound on the old school originals (or my live bootlegs). The dynamics on any old Dire Straits CD, or an album like Paranoid or Ride the Lightning blow away pretty much anything I've bought in the last few years.

You don't seem to understand,vintage Metallica/Slayer WAS dynamic...anything before 1992 was dynamic.

I do play a fair bit of guitar casually (an amateur though), and did some fooling around at a friend's studio in SF (he's in the recording industry) some time ago - recorded a few riffs and we were ****ing around on the sound and pedals to make me sound better I actually am. :D this sort of practice is quite common in the industry... but it's not done by everyone or to such extremes as the vid shows. that said - grab a remastered re-release of any old Megadeth CD, and hunt down the original LP equivalent (in good condition). The older record will BLOW you away in comparison.

Exactly! one could just crank up the volume and still be able to enjoy music...you can't do that anymore. although the GH3 rip of Death magnetic rocks and the new Gn'R cd has dynamics as well!!

I can do a bit of mixing with DAW's and i have couple of modern multitrack recordings (which were butchered when they were released) and they sound brilliant when mixed properly.
