Ian Chappell thinks so ? Getty Images Ian Chappell, the former Australian captain, has come down hard on Sachin Tendulkar, saying the time had come for him to consider quitting the game. Chappell said that the Tendulkar decision would be crucial as India try and rebuild after their shocking first round exit from the ongoing World Cup. Tendulkar managed only 64 runs in India's three first-round matches of the World Cup, and couldn't make much of an impact against Bangladesh (7) and Sri Lanka (0), the two games India lost. "Before anybody else makes a decision on what will happen to Tendulkar the player himself has to have a good long look in the mirror and decide what he's trying to achieve in the game," Chappell, 63, wrote in Mid-Day, a Mumbai-based tabloid. "At the moment he looks like a player trying to eke out a career; build on a glittering array of statistics. If he really is playing for that reason and not to help win as many matches as he can for India then he is wasting his time and should retire immediately." Chappell went on to compare Tendulkar with Brian Lara, the West Indian captain, and pointed out how the latter hadn't changed his style of play over a 17-year career. "This is a credit to his technique and mental strength, as the aging process generally makes a player more progressively conservative," Chappell wrote of Lara. "Tendulkar hasn't worn as well; his last three or four years have been a shadow of his former self. Chappell took into consideration the slew of injuries that Tendulkar had suffered during his career, a factor that had forced him to miss a number of matches in this decade. "Tendulkar hasn't been as lucky as Lara," Chappell wrote, "the Indian batsman has suffered a lot of injuries in this period where his play has deteriorated and there is nothing that melts your mental approach quicker than physical handicaps. Lara has been relatively free from injury and he certainly doesn't have the weight of numbers riding on his shoulders that Tendulkar does. However, the population of the Caribbean might be small but they are extremely demanding. "Despite all the fuss and the odd controversy that has surrounded Lara's career he has remained himself; this is my game and that is how I play. For whatever reason Tendulkar hasn't been able to maintain his extremely high standards for the last few years and unless he can find a way to recapture this mental approach he's not doing his team or himself any favours. "If Tendulkar had found an honest mirror three years ago and asked the question; 'Mirror, mirror on the wall who is the best batsman of all?' It would've answered; 'Brian Charles Lara.' If he asked that same mirror right now; 'Mirror, mirror on the wall should I retire?' The answer would be; 'Yes.'

hidden agenda It seems Ian Chappell is giving some help to his brother in passing the buck around. Granted Tendulkar hasn't been the same bat as he was once for some time now, but he still does produce a quality innings time to time. Ian Chappell's assessment of Tendulkar is extremely negative - I still think Tendulkar has 1-2 years of one-day cricket left in him (and perhaps more in Tests). Also remember Tendulkar was shuffled around by Greg Chappell in the batting order which might have affected his batting. Ian Chappell might be totally honest about his opinion - but i highly doubt it. He is just helping Greg to push his agenda.

The emotions currently are high and am sure a lot of people will call for Tendulkar's head. Of late I have noticed his approach, he likes to take less risk which is understandable and at times he likes to stay unbeaten. I'm sure he is feeling the need to set up numbers now. It is a tough ask but I think he can play for a year or two still. Perhaps he could call it a day as well considering there is not much for him to achieve. World Cup 2007 was something he wanted desperately for India to win and now that it is off he could as well just concentrate on test cricket.

Re: Tendulkar should consider quitting - Ian Chappell Ravi, I think Sachin should quit ODIs as it is for younger people and he certainly won't play in 2011. So there is absolutely no point in continuing. His sole aim should be test cricket and concentrating on that fully. He should see how he goes in the next few tests : we have 12 tests to play in next 12 months. If he is okay there, he can continue for another year. If not, he should quit without damaging his hard earned reputation further.

Now I want him to give one last shot to the game---concentrate on tests. There is no point in playing ODIs when you know that you won't play the next WC.

He is the single biggest reason, i started watching cricket with interest. But Team India is not a welfare organization, nor do we owe any unconditional loyalty to any player. Its only fair to adjust our sentiments towards Sachin, based on his performances. Hey, thats how everything works in life. Sachin has nothing to prove or look forward to anymore in ODIs. He must focus his full attention on tests, theres a lot at stake for him in tests. I'll give him two more series. Am not going to accept yet another series with an avg of 30 or 35. Infact I dont give a damn about his averages. He must win a test with his bat, or come out as the dominant batsman of the series. Its been close to 5 years, since he did that. If he manages yet another mediocre series, he must simply retire without diluting his legacy any further

There has been enough waiting and watching over the last 3-4 years. Post world cup he has hardly had a decent full year. I'm not going to sit and wait for him to come good again. As everyone else I used to give up everything to watch him but now the minute he is at the crease I just tentatively take my eye off my telly. :shrug:

Re: Tendulkar should consider quitting - Ian Chappell nice article, and spot on assessment.... as much as i acknowledge TEndulkar's wane of powers, i will not support the cry to retire him..... he simply cannot be made to retire with Ganguly and LAxman in the team... He at his trough is a better player than these 2 in test matches and ODIs.... I would start the process of phasing em out one by one... and Tendulkar should be given 2 more yrs.....

I agree with the overall sentiment that he should retire sooner than later. I am amazed at how some people never get bored watching someone suck and still keep hoping that they will deliver miracles from the past.

We cannot remove even guys like Sehwag and Ganguly with their string of poor performances. Forget about SRT. Those who are talking against him are with specific agenda. This connects back to SMG' comments for Australians. I tell you, if he had scored 150 and dravid had score say 30-40 runs and we had lost the same way, these ozz jokers would call for Dravid;s head. Yaar this guy has made more runs than both the brothers together. I still think that how come we got worse after Greg was appointed? He is an intelligent ...@#$@. Now having said that I personally feel that SRT, Sehwag and Gangs should be immediately dropped from the team. SRT, Gangs for 6 mos and Sehwag forever. Play them conservatevely. I am sure next outing against australia, we should see a cracking win from SRT.

My earliest memory of SRT remains a battling teenager facing up to Imran/Wasim/Waqar/Qadir in their backyard. Even after having a bloodied nose(by Waqar) in a Test innings Sachin did not give up and went on to score a half-century. Of course in another match he completely dismantled the wily Qadir and his undertrainee Mushtaq Ahmed. Those should have been the lasting memories of Sachin and not the batsman who left a big gap between his bat and bat to be bowled off an inside edge off a Fernando. Slowly but surely Sachin has been sinking and he has went down so much now that not only is he widely accepted as past his best but also as someone who should look upto other mortals(like Lara) and learn from them. Ian Chappell is by and large on the money. I did not like his overt comparison of Lara and Sachin but as a writer thats his call and I respect that. What is greatly saddening is that there would be little rebuttal to Ian's thoughts. For one, Sachin's record in past few months hardly proves Ian wrong. Secondly, Indian greats hardly stand up to defend their compatriots, only exception being Sunny Gavaskar who can be expected to defend Sachin. Then again many "Indians", let alone foreigners, would be quick to deem that as a support of Maharastrian lobby rather than anything. Lastly, the common Indian fan has practically given up on Sachin. In a way we are all tired of standing up and taking on practically every one else to show how Sachin was, and is, the greatests. However today most of us are frankly singing, "What have you done for me lately". What a fall from grace. Deja vu(Kapil Dev) all over again.

At that time, SRT was performing like that, to inspire such comments & was rightly praised. But now his powers have waned & he is rightly being criticized. Why is it so difficult for us to accept this ? Ian Chappell is a no nonsense cricket journalist. He always calls it as he sees it. Forget that he is an Aussie or Greg's brother. We shud evaluate his comments, based on its merit. Barring flat pitches and/or poor opponents, SRT has been pretty much a walking wicket, every time he went out to bat in the last couple of years, in both forms of the game. SRT's problem is his legacy. Great players shud never reduce themselves to this level of mediocrity. He has his legacy at stake here. He wouldnt want the world to remember him for how he left, rather how he ruled the game in the 90s. If he wants to be remembered like that, he must leave on a high note. Like i said, two more test series for him and we'll take it from there.

I agree with you completely. At least we can understand that he was plagued by injuries since 2004 itself, never got completely fit. Now he should look to do that, forget about ODIs, and perform in those two test series--I'll say three (why exclude BD here?). And if he is able to find his touch, well and good. If not, he should quit.

Bumper. The only problem with that argument is that SRT's performance in Test series has been worse than what it has been in ODI. Look at his last 4 Test series. Sri Lanka in India, 2005/06 [series] Ind 3 5 0 189 109 23 22 37.80 1 0 0 India in Pakistan, 2005/06 [series] Pak 3 3 0 63 26 23 14 21.00 0 0 0 England in India, 2005/06 [series] - 3 5 1 83 34 28* 16 20.75 0 0 0 India in South Africa, 2006/07 [series] SA 3 6 0 199 64 63 44 33.16 0 2 1 So basically 2 series home, 2 series abroad. A fair sample I would say. 12 Tests 534 runs@29.66 Would you want such a player on pure merit in your team?? xxxxx

If he has regained his fitness (it'll help him if he stops playing in the meaningless ODIs now) I'd like him to play in the coming BD, Eng, Pak and Australia series. If he doesn't improve or gets injured further, he should quit.
