Whenever you hear why India is so different to the rest of the countries in the region one word you will always here is - Institutions. Well ladies and gentlemen thank your ancestors, and gods if you are are a beleiver, that you are born in a land that has such strong institutions that is frankly unparalleled in the region, and even in the world. Here are some highlights from this election: a) 714 million eligible electorate in India. More than combined population of United States, Indonesia & Brazil - three countries that round up the top 5 most populous countries of the world apart from India and China. More votes polled than European Parliamentary elections and United States Presidential elections, combined. c) The new voting machines has effectively, if not completely, shut down the ills that used to be booth-capturing. d) All political parties are wary of breaking the EC code of law and those who tried to push the envelope were swiftly dealt with. This area needs a bit of work but it is hard to deny the fact that the criminal-politician nexus that typically fears noone is extremely fearful of EC. e) Criminals with convictions were not allowed to contest. The debarring of the criminals has meant the political parties also have walked away from them. In many cases these criminals put their proxies, wives mostly, as Independent since no partes would grant them ticket. In Bihar all these proxies lost handsomely. Quick thanks also to the average Indian Electorate (picture RK Laxman's Indian )who inspite of his problems that life throws at him/her, still plays the vital role in keeping India a thriving Democracy. XXX PS: Lalit Modi can take his IPL to South Africa or wherever he may deem fit, kudos also to GOI to show where the priorities of the country lie.

Given all the corruption and the abuse of power and govt machinery by the politicians, its renarkable to think how EC has remained this fiercely independent organization, atleast for the most part. Its not just holding elections that makes the world sit up and take notice, its holding free and fair elections that makes people respect us.
suraj Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 Yes it is a great achievement and add to that the achievement of the public in selecting, not in all cases, but in a major way for stability, economic development and progressive thought rather than the villany of Paswan, Laloo and Mayawati. add to that the the grace in defeat by major leaders such as Advani & Jaitley- it is time to feel proud Hopefully next 5 years show greater progress but also hopefully the eye on national security & public safety is not lost by either neglecting it or trying to keep a section of vote bank happy by appeasement. If now certain leaders don't learn that ensuring good administration of their responsible areas is the key then shame on them and hopefully we never see them again in politics.

Disagreements aside there is no doubt in my mind that he is very passionate about his ideology. So of course he would be nothing short of devastated to see the result. The point to ponder though is did BJP also lose some votes because of belligerence of its supporters like VR/DR? I fail to see many Indians getting swayed by his ad-nauseum attacks on Liberal/Centralists/Secularists. As MJ Akbar said it perfectly, India is Secular not because of Muslims but because of Hindus. xxx

I have had many arguments with both of them and I have different viewpoints on some issues, but I like their passion. If everyone has the same opinion it is boring, gotta have some differences to argue about.

In that case the credit goes to the intelligence agencies that did not allow such plans to be hatched. Infact counter terrorism best works at intelligence levels. Once the terrorists have managed to import the necessary equipments, man power and intelligence, its next to impossible to stop them from conducting an attack.
