triam Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 How many people supporting this would support banning of turbans for sikhs banning of wearing bindis for women banning of religious jewellery like rings and medallions? The only valid argument against burkahs is that of security. I dont have an answer to that.

Sikhs don't go around telling their women to wear turban , See their in lies the difference which your liberal mind fails to comprehend . They would rather face hardship for themselves then imposing on an women ! :winky: Also , here is a question for you . Do you feel that women are sex objects that have to cover their faces lest lustful men don't rape them? After all that's the origin of Burqa which I believe has nothing to do with koran .I am not an expert , but koran says dress modestly not like a prisoner. I don't have a problem with Hijab and neither do the french . So stop bloviating on a benign issue and instead concentrate on real issues like polygamy , sharia divorce, banning of pork in muslim countries etc
Lurker Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 banning of turbans for sikhs I have issues against Sikhs carrying kripans. Cant see any issue with turbans. banning of wearing bindis for women Whats odd with a bindi?? banning of religious jewellery like rings and medallions? Dont know about rings and medallions but churis(bangles) are sexy..also waist bands(kamardhanni). I say give me a girl who wears just those and nothing else...but I digress :winky:
ludhianvi Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 The French in general are very uptight about their language and culture. That said I dont understand a logical reason as to why would they ban hijabs?? The face can be seen fully when wearing a hijab. They are obviously feeling insecure. The repercussions of 9/11 :(( The mainstream media really puts coverage about the affairs in the Arab countries but shouldnt they be covering this more?? This is in violation of basic human rights in my opinion.

I dont care if it is part of koran or not , it obviously is a big cultural deal for muslims. Yes i would condemn real issues like what you stated if you or someone else opens a thread about it gladly.

Yes i would condemn real issues like what you stated if you or someone else opens a thread about it gladly. No , I don't claim that in an Indian society their is no discrimination towards women. Au contraire , we have long way to go to level the playing field ! But I find it very strange and disturbing that likes of you , MM etc feel the need to join in on the Muslim victim hood bandwagon by condemning such a benign law knowing fully well that the Islamic laws are very harsh against non muslims in countries wherein they are majority . Defending the burqa, as an extension of cultural sensitivity toward Muslims, is akin to encouraging subservience of women. Admit it that some of these women who even if they wear burqa on their choice are culturally lobotomized, raised to feel such shame about their own physical presence that they are fearful of exposing their face lest they dishonor their families. ! Bottom line is , their are 1.3 billion muslims wordwide . In countries wherein they are majority , they can come with any ridiculous discriminatory law like for example banning pork , apostasy law etc , but some of the same subjects in the west want the whole world to bend backwards to accommodate them ! Just like they justify laws such as banning pork , halal meat in their country , france is well within it's right to ban burqa ! It's beyond me , why some of you have beef with an infinitesimal discrimination in france , completely ignoring the infinite discrimination that goes in the name Sharia in muslim countries .
Guest Gunner Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 i know plenty of hindu kids in the states eat beef' date=' etc. doesn't prove anything about indian hindus back home. minorities often take more pride in being minorities than "majorities do". in fact, you'll find a higher proportion of practicing muslims in places like the USA/UK than in bangladesh or pakistan. merely having an [empty'] mosque on every corner and ten suicide bombers per week doesn't an observant muslim make. I really don't see the connection between eating beef and covering a woman up like a prisoner. Eating beef doesn't bother me at all. AFAIK eating beef is a social convention linked to the role of the cow in agrarian society which was given a religious bent, I could never actually find it in any Indian scripture prohibhiting a hindu from doing anything let alone eating beef. So my question still stands, if muslim women like to wear the hijab why do they rush to take it off?
Desi Cartman Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 here is a question : Can sati be allowed if the women are ok with it ? Can the women who are willing to burn themselves be allowed to do it ?
yoda Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 Govt shouldn't be telling people what they should and shouldn't be wearing. This is a slippery slope. Tomorrow another politician would want to ban the Sikh Turban and I am guessing that would be fine as well for those of you who approve of this ban?
yoda Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 here is a question : Can sati be allowed if the women are ok with it ? Can the women who are willing to burn themselves be allowed to do it ? It depends on the laws of the land. Since suicide is illegal, it would not be allowed.
yoda Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 And I am sure you will support Digambar Jain monks walking naked in the streets . After all ' date=' you are gonna trample their religious sensitivity if you oppose their action ![/quote'] nudity affects others (don' ask me to explain why), which is why it is pretty much illegal the world over.

I am guessing at least some of those men would rather not wear that turban, but do so due to the religion. If Muslim women have a problem with the Burqa (I am sure most of them do), it is THEY who have to liberate themselves. Can't expect (and neither should) a french politician to take it upon himself to solve the problems of a religion. I think the west should be equally concerned about young girls walking half naked on their streets and getting pregnant in their teens and the Muslims should be concerned about their own issues. But neither should act like the know-it-all and act as a problem solver for the other.
fineleg Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 The only problem in the ruling is: What if a woman who is used to wearing the burka is now uncomfortable herself in not wearing it, and prefers to continue wearing one? (some people dont embrace change, and want to continue what they have been doing as long as it is only personal choice). Now, is the govt going to force her to not wear it, even though her dress is her personal preference? On the other hand, the security argument is valid one as well.

Atleast in schools and colleges it is.
yoda Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 Its not a question of liberation...yada yada yada. Their country' date=' their rules. Don't like it, piss off.[/quote'] Whose country? Country of the citizens. So every citizen has the right to live in a non-discriminatory environment. Also, it is not the law yet, which is why it is being debated. And even if it is a law, it doesn't mean it is correct. The US once had a Supreme Court ruling saying blacks can never be treated equally, doesn't make it right. The sikh turban is banned in France I think. Atleast in schools and colleges it is. I know there have been issues with the Kirpan being taken by kids to schools in Canada and may be elsewhere, haven't heard of a turban ban.

If you expect the muslim women to liberate themselves , then you are living in a la la land .French government is not solving any problem , most french find the burqa objectionable , they want to ban it . They are well within their rights to do so. If they find turban objectionable , then they should ban it but I doubt that they would find it objectionable. Btw , I don't see Sikhs getting killed for not wearing the turban , do you ? Just like muslims make laws in their country on what is haram , what is halal , france is well with it's rights to do so. I don't see you complaining when it comes to Islamic laws . Just the other day ,moderate Malayasia banned trousers for women , I don't see you or muslims worldwide for that matter complaining !
