nikred Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 Rice + Dal = Fingers or Cutlery ? Sambar + Idli = Fingers of Cutlery ? Do you avoid eating with your fingers ? For foods that are easier with fingers, do you use cutlery ? If I am at home except for noodles I will use my fingers to eat. I don't know but I feel the real taste of what I am eating only when I use my fingers to eat. I don't know if its just me but that's how it is. Even if I am in the posh restaurant and everyone with me is using cutlery to eat dosa, I am confident enough to use my fingers. Rice + Dal = fingers Sambar + Idli = fingers and spoon for sambar. :--D
Sachinism Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 Had a 9" Pizza and a cherry coke :woot: I use fingers where possible. If I'm out it depends on the kind of place it is, even then I'll use fingers wherever I can
EnterTheVoid Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 Chicken wings, papad, idli etc, one can't eat with cutlery - thats a no brainer Noodles, spaghetti, etc, one can't eat with hand For food you use you fingers to mix - rice + dal, rice + sambar, rice + kura (sabjhi), rice + chutney etc, do you use cutlery ? Back in India, I used to use fingers to mix and eat. Here, although we cook the same foods, rice, dal, sabhji etc, I use cutlery.
Sachinism Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 Food like rice and daal, rice and sambhar I use a spoon, too messy for fingers
EnterTheVoid Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 Another question: If you go to an Indian restaraunt and its packed with white people, do you have second thoughts before ordering food like roti's / parathas - i.e. food you eat with fingers ? I do. I must be suffering from a serious bout of inferiority complex. I once went with my friends to an Indian restaraunt that was packed with goras. We ordered the same food but they dug in using their fingers whilst I used cutlery, which was quite awkward, as rotis / parathas are not meant to be eaten with knife and fork

That food is meant to be eaten that way. They do the same, white people don't use a knife and fork while eating rotis or naans, why do you have to act different to 'impress' them. God has given us hands to use to eat. Cutlery was invented many years later. There's a very famous outlet here called Nando's its Portugese, they encourage people to use their hands to eat. Stop being insecure and be happy and proud of what you are.
EnterTheVoid Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 Pretty much what my dad tells me everytime we visit an Indian joint. The food is meant to be eaten that way, use your fingers :nice: There's a very famous outlet here called Nando's its Portugese' date= they encourage people to use their hands to eat. Interesting. I got to Nando's all the time. Tell me more.

Sachinism Posted October 6, 2009 Posted October 6, 2009 I can't rememebr exactly what they said. But they had napkins on which it used to say something like, "Don't be a chicken, get a bit messy, use your hands, it adds to the flavour/experience and it saves us washing up the cutlery" lol
