It has got nothing to do 'ravam' etc. Arudra garu said part of Tamil Nadu (Chengalpat, Arcot etc) is called "Aaravanadu". That province is close to Telugu nadu. So we started calling them 'aravvallu' and their language as 'aravam'. It is wrong to refer whole Tamil community by that name. Still we do it. Konga nadu (Coimbatore, Salem area) is close to Karnataka and they call all the Tamils as "Kongattis". Again techncially wrong. Regards Prasad KTHXBAI.
