CricketGirl
A young second generation Indian in the US was asked by his mother to explain the significance of "Diwali" to his younger brother, this is how he went about it.... " So, like this dude had, like, a big cool kingdom and people liked him. But, like, his step-mom, or something, was kind of a *****, and she forced her husband to, like, send this cool-dude, he was Ram, to some national forest or something... Since he was going, for like, something like more than 10 years or so... he decided to get his wife and his bro along... you know...so that they could all chill out together. But Dude, the forest was reeeeal scary ****... really man...they had monkeys and devils and **** like that. But this dude, Ram, kicked with darts and bows and arrows... so it was fine.. But then some bad gangsta boys, some jerk called Ravan, picks up his babe (Sita) and lures her away to his hood. And boy, was our man, and also his bro, Laxman, pissed... all the gods were with him... So anyways, you don't mess with gods. So, Ram, and his bro get an army of monkeys... Dude, don't ask me how they trained the damn monkeys... just go along with me, ok... So, Ram, Lax and their monkeys whip this gangsta's A*s in his own hood... Anyways, by this time, their time's up in the forest... and anyways... it gets kinda boring, you know... no TV or malls or **** like that. So,they decided to hitch a ride back home... and when the people realize that our dude, his bro and the wife are back home... they thought, well, you know, at least they deserve something nice... and they didn't have any bars or clubs in those days... so they couldn't take them out for a drink, so they, like, decided to smoke and ****... and since they also had some lamps, they lit the lamps also...so it was pretty cooool... you know with all those fireworks... Really, they even had some local band play along with the fireworks... and you know, what, dude, that was the very first, no kidding.., thatwas the very first music-synchronized fireworks... you know, like the 4th of July stuff, but just, more cooler and stuff, you know. And, so dude, that was how, like, this festival started." The mother fainted.

Don Sharma
Down South (let me be particular:nervous:) in TN, Diwali is celebrated to mark the victory of Krishna over Narakaasur. Until now I didn't know that it is also celebrated to mark Rama's victory.:((

Don Sharma
And until now I did not even know about Narakasura. So Krishna kicked his sorry ass? For me Deewali is about lights, sweets and fireworks. Yep he did. Narakasura was son of Bhumadevi(don't know how she is called in North), goddess of Earth. Nara was very powerful and he got a boon/wish that he would die at the hands of his mother ONLY. Lord krishna, brainy as he is, faked an injury and provoked Sathyabama(wifey of Lord Krishna alias an avatar of Bhumadevi) to kill Nara.

The same Deewali is observed in the eastern parts of India as Kali pooja. They actually worship huge idols of Kali. Its most popular in West Bengal and to some extent in Assam and Orissa. Quite a lot of people believe that it is Laxmi pooja. In fact most desi businessmen put their books of accounts next to laxmi and worship hoping to persuade her to put extra money in their accounts.....you know the normal give and take business. Then there are people who believe its a Durga pooja (three Durga poojas come in a year) as Kali is a part/incarnation of Durga. One festival....so many different beliefs. I don't know about other states but Laxmi pooja is observed in Andhra Pradesh too which is followed by the main diwali celebration but its the krishna's victory over narakasura story

Ram
The two things I vehemently hated about Diwali; -- Getting up at 3.30, 4 in the morning. Most times, we would have started celebrating/bursting crackers from the previous evening itself so we would have gone to bed quite late the previous night. And then, to get so early was terrible..:(( -- The oil-bath with that ‘Meera Sheika’(?).. That literally burnt a hole in my eyes! But my gaaad, nothing can match the fun and fervour of Diwali though. :yay:

Don Sharma
Diwali eve pwns the Diwali day. I used to spend the entire night hanging out with my friends, return home early in the morning, hit the shower straight, poojas, then sleep all day and finally go watch a film in the evening. Why did I age:banghead: They do a special Vaan kozhi(turkey) biriyani on Diwali eve:woot:
