The Outsider Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 Seven ODIs in England 'are too many' - Ponting Ricky Ponting has spoken out against the scheduling of the one-day series in England that has left his team - and England - with no time for warm-up matches and only a couple of days to acclimatise to local conditions before taking on West Indies on Saturday. Australia, the defending champions, arrived in South Africa after a seven-ODI series in England, which they won 6-1, and Ricky Ponting said it was too long a contest. "Every other team is in South Africa playing practice matches while we are finishing off this [England] series," Ponting said on arrival in Johannesburg. "We know the reasons for it, but seven games head-to-head are too many. There are some tired bodies in our camp at the moment so we will have a rest today and start preparing tomorrow for our first match on Saturday. "The Champions Trophy is going to be a very tight tournament because there are some very good teams taking part and Sri Lanka have already caused a surprise [by beating South Africa]. I regard Sri Lanka as one of the top ODI teams and once they put on more than 300 runs it was always going to be hard work for South Africa." The format of the 2009 tournament - the eight best teams split into two groups with the top two from each qualifying for the semi-finals - leaves little margin for error and makes it difficult for teams to bounce back from early losses. Australia, however, begin their campaign against the weakest team in the competition, a starless West Indies, at the Wanderers in Johannesburg. http://www.cricinfo.com/iccct2009/content/current/story/426283.html :winky:
Mr. Wicket Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 Too long a contest? I remember Tendulkar playing through a long World Cup in 2003 (right on the heels of a tour to NZ and some warmup ODIs in between) with a broken bone in his foot and not muttering a word. Ponting went vacationing for the first few ODIs of that series, returned with the series basically under control at 3-0 and now after 4 ODIs he's complaining? Sheesh. [Hard to imagine SRW or Border ever complaining like this.]
Mr. Wicket Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 BTW did Ponting complain that five test matches and a handful of practice f/c games in between were 'too long'? Did Ponting complain about the length of the IPL1 when he took part? How is it that only now with a major multinational tourney coming up and Australia not certain to make the knockout stage, Ponting's complaining about tournament schedules and lengths?
yoda Posted September 23, 2009 Posted September 23, 2009 :punter: man this image is both funny and irritating.

Mr. Wicket Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 I thought it was a broken bone in one of his toes? May be wrong, either way I remember he needed some time off after that to recover and heal... a lesson there to people like Ponting, as well as the folks under the three lions caps who run off the field every 10 minutes and bring on a sub because their fingernails hurt.

Also I've never seen him retire hurt..
Mr. Wicket Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 Also I've never seen him retire hurt.. http://www.cricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/66347.html He wasn't the only one that game. When Actor was getting his ass handed to him he also left the field.
Shehezaada Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 http://www.cricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/66347.html He wasn't the only one that game. When Actor was getting his ass handed to him he also left the field. Ponting didn't return after the lunch break, opting to rest himself after he found some discomfort in one leg gimme a break man. OK so Ponting isn't the Michael Jordan or Tendulkar type....people so competitive and wanting to give even an inch that they'll play through the pain no matter what. But he's still a tough guy. Have you ever played cricket and fielded at silly point/leg? It's not a picnic. I have bruises all over my body (our off spinner tends to bowl short) still I play through the pain. Getting clocked in the head, without ANY helmet, is unbelievable, and to play on is definitely worthy of respect. And all Ponting is really saying is that some of their players are tired. He never said HE was. Your trying to force a connection with that statement and his toughness and that doesn't really make sense....then you go on to compare him with Sachin, which worse still. Tendulkar never really fields at silly point....I started watching regular cricket from 2001, and I've seen Tendulkar in their literally once....the dying moments of the Sydney test. Couldn't someone say that Tendulkar isn't tough enough because he chooses to field far away at slip rather then to face the music under the helmet? Of course that's ridiculous. Mental strength or physical isn't judged by your comments, it's judged by your attitude and the way you handle things down the stretch. Tendulkar, the ultimate warrior of India, is as tough as they come, but Ponting's not too far behind either.
Mr. Wicket Posted September 24, 2009 Posted September 24, 2009 Um - you said you'd never seen Ponting ever retire hurt. I simply pointed out a match where it happened to fill in a gap in your knowledge.

But can you point out an example of where he HAD to retire hurt, and not just for optional reason?

Mr. Wicket Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 its heartening to see you comment about ponting in this fashion... I grew up watching Border, Boonie and a young Steve Waugh fighting it out in the Aussie middle order, back before Australia was anything NEAR the force they became in the late 90s. The team then had cojones. Balls. Guts. Sheer fight. Border was a man who would drill it into his team that they could not go down until every last man had given up every bit of sweat and blood in their bodies, and then he would lead by example. I have seen better teams since then, more talented, more exciting and more interesting teams, but few tougher. And now what I see what Australia have turned into under Ponting, with these sorts of excuses rather than Border and Boon just glaring at the opposition and snarling away in between fighting with every bit of grit in their bodies, it depresses me.

If ur a unbiased guy u surely wud have learnt to appreicate him and his career records instead of whinning!!! And ponting didnt go vacationing, It was part of player management from CA, now dont tell me that Sachin neva took a break :finger: And finally when did border or waugh played & match series.?
