kabira
Amit Mishra has not played a single international game since NZL tour. I mean first class long version game. He was there in the squad for 7 ODIs, if he was not required to be in XI, he should have been asked to play atleast on Ranji Game. Right now looks like his lack of match practice is causing big headache. Link to comment
saneindian
So true. Keeping the same in mind, I wonder why did the selectors not realease Sreesanth and badri from the squad once it was clear that they werent in the final 11. Playing a ranji trophy game will work better for them than carrying drinks or fielding sometimes as a substitute. Link to comment
kabira
^you need 12th and 13th man. Link to comment
Chandan
No. They could have easily called those substitute players from Gujarat team. Remember how Garry Pratt had run Ponting out in 2005 Ashes? Was he ever mentioned in any squad for England? I think it is absolutely insensible to let these players warm the bench only. What on earth is Badrinath gaining here? These things also demotivate players and this is why we saw Badri misfield whenever he came as a substitute fielder yesterday. Link to comment
kabira
Gujarat team is playing in Ranji. Link to comment
Chandan
Gujarat team is playing in Ranji. And you think it has only 11 players? Gujarat cricket association had announced a big squad of 17 players. What about those extra six players then? If they'll get an opportunity to get on the field of an international match, they'll be thrilled and will give their all unlike Badri and Sreesanth. Link to comment
kabira
^It should not be allowed, only those designated as 12th and 13th man should field. Link to comment
kabira
and you need two players as cover, what if there is injury last minute before the test match. Link to comment
Chandan
^It should not be allowed' date=' only those designated as 12th and 13th man should field.[/quote'] I don't think so. It is good for the players if we ask for substitue fielders from the states where matches are being held. and you need two players as cover' date=' what if there is injury last minute before the test match.[/quote'] Even then, they could have been free from 8.30 in the morning of 16th Nov and their Ranji matches were starting from 17th. They had enough time to go there and join their respective teams. Link to comment
kabira
^ no Chandan, its unfair advantage to the home team. If thats the case can SL call substitutes?? Link to comment
Chandan
^ no Chandan' date=' its unfair advantage to the home team. If thats the case can SL call substitutes??[/quote'] Kabira, Every home team has certain advantages. It is not as if the touring team will never have home matches. They'll have that advantage when they are hosting matches. And then, how does it become unfair? Isn't it the same as home team knowing the pitch and conditions better than the touring team? PS : Mishra is bowling dreadfully. Choosing a player without any matches under his belt is dangerous. India has been reduced to 3 bowlers virtually and in that too Bhajji and Ishant are not in their best of forms and Zaheer is coming back from an injury. Attack looks hopeless right now. saneindian
Yuvraj and Kaif hardly played any domestic cricket in their initial years with team India because of the same policy. They used to travel with the test team and warm the benches. It never helped them develop as a first class cricketer. High time we learned our lessons and picked at max 12 players for a home test match and not more. Link to comment

Pitches and conditions can be conquered. But this disadvantage of allowing state level players to field does not make sense. Link to comment

The Outsider
I have been stressing this point for so long. It's lunacy to select 15 and 16 member squads for home matches, when there is the domestic season going on. Selection should be for 13 players maximum and the two reserves should be released on the morning of the match. Unfortunately, the reason for selecting such a big squad is nothing more than zonal politics where the selector from each zone can go back to his mai baaps and tell them, "See, sirjee, we got our ladka into the squad" while dipping Britannia biscuits into over sweetened chai. graphic23
Can we drop both Bhajji and Mishra for the next test? We're so down on bench strength right now, that our next best options are Chawla and Ojha (who might be a decent bowler, IMO). Link to comment
