Google to stream IPL-III matches lives on Youtube YouTube to stream IPL-III matches live Aminah Sheikh / Mumbai January 19, 2010, 0:56 IST BCCI to partner Google India for the venture. Cricket lovers can now watch the Indian Premier League (IPL) live on internet portal YouTube. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will partner with Google India to stream live matches of its domestic IPL league in the Twenty20 format. Google’s video streaming internet portal YouTube will stream live matches of IPL-III, which begins in March. This will include 44 days of IPL, with 59 matches. YouTube already has a video channel for IPL. It was launched during IPL-II and exclusively streamed highlights of the matches played then, as well as the inaugural session and the award ceremony. The latest development is an extension of what YouTube offered its users. Users, on the other hand, can view the matches on YouTube free of cost. The announcement is likely to be made on Wednesday. However, it’s not clear if the rights have been sold for a specific period of years to Google or whether it’s a revenue-sharing deal. While Multi Screen Media (formerly known as Sony Entertainment and the company that owns SET Max, which airs IPL) holds the satellite telecast rights, the global media rights are held by World Sports Group (WSG), which implies BCCI cannot sell the new media rights to any other company. According to sources, WSG’s rights only include telecast rights. However, when contacted, WSG President (South Asia) Venu Nair declined to comment on the issue, but added: “We are not aware of any partnership between IPL & Google and cannot comment on what is not relevant to WSG,†he said. On the other hand, Multi Screen Media President Rohit Gupta said: “Live streaming of IPL on YouTube will help create buzz and excitement around the league. It does not affect our viewership, as the core viewers remain with television.†Search giant Google is one of the most popular online properties in India. For instance, Google.Co.In attracts 31.6 million unique users (UUs) per month and has an India reach of 73.6 per cent, with 2,832 million page views per month, according to a report by audience measurement agency Vizisense. Meanwhile, Google.Com gets 28.8 million UUs per month. Its social networking property, Orkut, attracts 15.3 million UUs per month and has 2,548 million page views monthly. Among video-sharing sites, Google’s YouTube scores again. It gets 10.9 million UUs per month.

Google back Indian Premier League search to go global The Indian Premier League's plans for expansion beyond the subcontinent will become clearer this week with the announcement of a historic deal with Google, the internet search engine giant, that may lead to live cricket being broadcast on the internet. By Nick Hoult in Mumbai Published: 6:35PM GMT 18 Jan 2010 Global deal: Lalit Modi, the chairman and commissioner of the IPL, wants live coverage to reach Europe and America via Google Photo: AP Telegraph Sport reported on Monday that the IPL and Google are close to agreeing a partnership and it is thought the finishing touches will be made in Mumbai today with an announcement to be made later this week. It will mean countries like Britain being able to watch IPL matches live again. It is thought Google will stream live content from the IPL on a YouTube channel which will be available in countries which currently do not broadcast the Twenty20 league. A similar deal was struck with the International Olympic Committee in 2008 which saw highlights from the Beijing Games streamed on YouTube in 77 countries. Sport on television The decision to share content and increase its online presence fits in with the plans of Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman and commissioner, to make his league a global brand along the lines of American football's NFL. Modi was unavailable for comment on Monday but he told India's Economic Times at the weekend that he hopes to hold matches in the United States within 18 months. He also admitted that IPL matches would be given a greater visual online presence in countries where there is no broadcast coverage. At the moment the IPL does not have a broadcast partner in Britain following last year's closure of Setanta. Modi said: "We think this is important to ensure every cricket lover in the world, wherever he or she is, is able to watch all IPL matches live through one of these mediums. We are ensuring that IPL is available throughout the world in every country starting this season." The tie-in with Google offers the IPL vast potential for new sponsorship and advertising markets. Many of its existing sponsorship rises exponentially with the amount of coverage the tournament can guarantee. Google, who will split advertising revenue, could enable the IPL to move beyond just cracking the US market. Pre-season friendlies may well be played in the Middle East, Singapore, Malaysia and England. "Singapore is also a great market and along with Hong Kong and Malaysia," Modi said. "We will see if we can combine the three to bring the true experience there too. "Of course, South Africa is special to us as we had a remarkable success there and will want to go back there too. All of these will be short one or two week tournaments." India is a booming online region, even though internet penetration stands at just seven per cent. But with India having a population of 1.1 billion that figure represents 81 million internet users, an audience bigger than country in Europe. In many respects this IPL season, which begins on March 12, will be the first to have been properly planned and marketed. The inaugural competition, in 2008, was thrown together in a few weeks following the hasty sale of the eight franchises as the Indian board reacted to the launch of the Indian Cricket League. Last year's event was moved from India to South Africa at even shorter notice due to security concerns but this time the franchises and IMG, the event management company, have had more than eight months to plan and relaunch the league. With the IPL thought to have sold television rights to the post-match parties, which will blend cricket and Bollywood glamour, it's all a very long way from the first Twenty20 match at Worcester's New Road 6½ years ago. It’s the growing game The TV rights deal signed in 2008 with Sony was worth $1billion over 10 years. It was renegotiated and raised to $1.2billion. IPL is shown live in more than 30 countries with 60 matches, to be increased to 94 in 2011

Whats the point of having it only for India, everyone has cable tv and can watch the game...if they really want to make it global, has to be outside India Also, not sure how they can Youtube only restrict to Indian IP's only
I'm just guessing based on how they are discussing .co.in domains in the article and this quote :
On the other hand, Multi Screen Media President Rohit Gupta said: “Live streaming of IPL on YouTube will help create buzz and excitement around the league. It does not affect our viewership, as the core viewers remain with television.”
Filtering out IPs won't be a big deal at all. I am watching the India-BD series on ESPN360 and it's only for US users - that too restricted to certain service providers. It'll really surprise me that companies like Willow which have purchased overseas online streaming rights won't have a clause disallowing something like this.

These rights will be helpful to people in India who will be able to watch these games at work . Since the number of matches is going to be more than 80 , so its safe to assume 2 matches will be played everyday which means that the first match will start around 3-4pm . Hence this whole thing ....

IPL to make foray in the US IPL to make foray in the US The IPL is contemplating of bringing the T20 event to the United States of America in near future to expand its global reach. The Indian Premier League is planning to take the mega event to that country to expand its global reach. According to a report in the 'London Times', IPL Chairman and Commissioner Lalit Modi is planning to stage some future matches of cash-rich tournament in the US. "We hope to be able to provide the fans in the US the live experience of the IPL. We will start with a few matches in the US in the next 18 months or so," Modi was quoted as saying in the newspaper. The report also predicted that bringing the IPL to the US would be a hugely profitable move for the private league. "Modi has won plaudits and derision for taking the commercialisation of cricket to new levels. Two years ago, shortly before the inaugural season, he secured USD 1 billion for the television rights to the IPL," the report said. "His latest plans to extend cricket's ambit are also likely to be motivated by money. America is home to the world's most valuable advertising market and a large population with roots in cricketing regions such as India, Pakistan and the West Indies," the report added.
